Printer Friendly
Description of Problem 100000000021

Multiple copies of the driver are installed after reconnecting the printer to the computer or laptop with a USB cable. The print queue shows the print job with the status "Error Printing". What can I do?

Description of Solution 200000000016

When reconnecting the USB cable to the computer or laptop the cable must be reconnected to the same USB port it was previously connected to. Otherwise, Windows will install another copy of the printer driver and the printer will no longer print. Most computers have two or more USB ports. To prevent this problem from occurring we would recommend labeling the end of the USB cable to indicate which USB port the cable must be reconnected to.

1.    Power off the printer using the power switch on the printer.

2.    Open the Printers folder.  Refer to the following solution for instructions if needed - "How do I open the Printers folder in Windows?"

3.    Locate the Brother printer in the list and hover your mouse over the Brother printer icon.  Below is an example of what you may see:

Status: 0 document(s) in queue (It could be any number)

or

(Printer) Status: Ready (Could also state: OFFLINE or PAUSED)

-      If there are 0 documents, go to STEP 7.

-      If there are any documents waiting in the queue, continue to STEP 4.

4.    Double click the printer.

-      Windows 7, 8, and 8.1: Double-click See What's Printing.

5.    Click Printer and Cancel All Documents.  This should clear the queue.  Close the print queue window.

NOTE:  You may have to make several attempts to completely clear the print queue.

6.    Wait for the print jobs to be deleted.

7.    Right click the Brother printer and left click Delete.

8.    Click Yes.

9.    Repeat STEPS 3 - 8 for each copy of the printer driver.

10. Power on the printer using the power switch on the printer. Windows should detect the printer and reinstall the printer driver.

-      If Windows installs the printer driver, continue to STEP 11.

-      If Windows does not install the printer driver, try a different USB cable within the recommended specs or a different port on the computer to determine if the issue is with the interface, or try connecting and printing from another computer to determine if the issue is specific to this computer's operating system.

11. Attempt to print again.

-      If you can print, then the issue is resolved.

-      If you are still unable to print, try a different USB cable within the recommended specs or a different port on the computer to determine if the issue is with the interface, or try connecting and printing from another computer to determine if the issue is specific to this computer's operating system.
