Why does the LCD display the message "NO CARTRIDGE" even though I installed all the ink cartridges?

Description of Solution 200000000750

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother ink for best results.  Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability since the ink formulation in genuine Brother ink cartridges prevent smearing and clogging of the print head.  The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that was caused by the use of third party ink and/or cartridges

If you are using non-Brother ink cartridges or ink refill we recommend you replace the ink cartridges with genuine Brother Ink cartridges. If you are using genuine Brother Ink cartridges follow the steps listed below to resolve this issue.

1. Unplug the machine from the AC power outlet, wait approximately 10 seconds and then plug it back in.

  •          If the date and time appear on the display, the issue is resolved.
  •          If the display continues to show "No Cartridge" continue to STEP 2.
  •           If the display now reads "INK EMPTY XXXXX" (XXXXX = one of the four colors) continue to STEP 3.

2. The message "No Cartridge" may appear if one or more of the cartridges are not properly installed or an ink cartridge is defective, such as air bubbles, or empty. Verify all the cartridges are installed correctly by following the steps listed below:

a. Open the ink cartridge cover located in the front of the machine, on the right side.

b .Push the purple lock release lever down and then remove the ink cartridges.

c. Because all the ink cartridges have been removed, the LCD will prompt you to install each color cartridge.

Important!!  Reinstall the ink cartridge(s) in the order of the LCD is instructing you too.

d. Lift and push the lock release lever until it clicks into place.

e. Close the ink cartridge cover.

d. The LCD will ask you if you have changed the cartridge to new.  Press 1 for yes and 2 for no.

  •          Press 1 if  new cartridge is installed
  •          Press 2 if the ink has previously been used.

e. The LCD will alternately show CLEANING and PLEASE WAIT. When the Brother machine completes the cleaning cycle, the LCD returns to Standby mode.

If the message No Cartridge continues to appear on the LCD and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by clicking on the link below:

3. The message INK EMPTY XXXXX ( XXXXX =  one of the four colors) indicates that one or more ink cartridges are empty. If one or more ink cartridges are empty, for example Black, the LCD shows Ink Empty Black and Open Cover. To replace the ink cartridges follow the steps listed below:

a. Open the ink cartridge cover located in the front of the machine, on the right side.

b .Push the purple lock release lever down and then remove the ink cartridge for the color shown on the LCD.

c. Open the new ink cartridge bag for the color shown on the LCD and then take out the ink cartridge.

d. Take out the protective yellow cap. NOTE: If the protective yellow caps come off when you open the bag, the cartridge will not be damaged.

e. Each color has its own correct position. Insert the new ink cartridge in the direction of the arrow on the label.

f. Lift and push the lock release lever until it clicks into place.

g. Close the ink cartridge cover.

h. The LCD may ask you to verify that it was a brand-new one. (For example, Did You Change Black?) For each new cartridge you installed, press a (Yes) to automatically reset the ink dot counter for that color.

NOTE: If the LCD displays the message "Install" verify the ink cartridge(s) were installed correctly by repeating Steps 1 through 7.

i. The Brother machine will enter a cleaning cycle for each replaced cartridge. The LCD alternately shows CLEANING and PLEASE WAIT. When the MFC completes the cleaning cycle, the LCD returns to Standby mode (date and time).

NOTE:

  •          Do not take out ink cartridges if you do not need to replace them. If you do so, it may reduce the ink quantity and the machine will not know the quantity of ink left in the cartridge.
  •          If you mix the colors by installing an ink cartridge in the wrong position, clean the print head several times after correcting the cartridge installation.
  •          Once you open an ink cartridge, install it in the machine and use it up within six months of installation.  Use unopened ink cartridges by the expiration date written on the cartridge package.
