How do I clear black vertical lines when sending a fax or copying?

Description of Solution 200000008014

1. Test the print quality by printing the Help List.  Press the REPORTS key located on the control panel and then press 1 (Help List) on the dial pad.

-        If the Help List printed with one or more black vertical lines, refer to solution: "How do I clear black vertical lines that appear on received faxes, internal prints and documents printed from the computer?"

-        If the Help List printed with a print quality issue, other than black vertical lines, refer to the appropriate solution for that issue.

-        If the print quality of the Help List is good, make a copy of the Help List.  To make a copy, place the document face down in the ADF (automatic document feeder) and press the COPY key.

- If the print quality of the copied Help List is good, the issue is resolved.

- If the copy of the Help List printed with one or more black vertical lines continue to STEP 2.

2. These types of lines are typically caused by dirt or white out on the scanner unit. The scanner unit is the mechanism that reads in the documents that are being sent or copied. This problem is usually resolved by cleaning the white pressure bar and the scanner glass strip with Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

3. Unplug the telephone line and then the power cord.  When you reconnect these lines later, connect the power cord first, then the telephone line.

4. Lift the control panel from the bottom.

5. The white pressure bar is located under the control panel (spring loaded).

The scanner cover glass in located directly below the pressure bar behind the metal roller.

Dampen a lint-free cloth with the Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and wipe down the white pressure bar and glass.

6. Close the control panel.

7. Plug in the power cord and then the telephone line and wait for the LCD to return to date and time.

8. Test the unit by making a copy of a blank sheet of paper.

-        If the black vertical lines do not appear on the copy, the issue is resolved.

-        If the black vertical lines continue to appear on the copied document, repeat the cleaning process, STEPS 3 through 8.

-        Again, be sure to unplug the telephone line and then the power cord.

-        In addition to cleaning the scanner glass with the alcohol, run your fingertip over the glass to see if you can feel anything on it.  If you feel any debris stuck on the glass, clean the glass again concentrating on that area.

-        You may have to repeat the cleaning process 3 or 4 times to eliminate all dirt or debris on the glass. After each cleaning, be sure to plug in the power cord followed by the telephone line.  Then, make a copy to test.
