How can I improve the copy or print quality?

If your Brother machine's print quality is poor, follow these steps:

 

1. Press REPORTS, 1 (Help List).

 

2. Do one of the following:

 

- If the Help List is poor quality, go to PRINT HEAD AND RIBBON MAINTENANCE.

 

- If the Help List prints normally, go to SCANNER MAINTENANCE.

 

 

SCANNER MAINTENANCE

 

1. Unplug the telephone cord.

 

2. Unplug the power cord.

 

3. Clean the scanner glass and white pressure bar by following these steps:

 

a. Open the Brother machine's control panel by tilting it toward the front of the machine.

 

b. Locate the white pressure bar and scanner glass inside the front of the machine.

 

- The scanner glass is a thin strip of clear glass located in front of the two small gray rollers.

 

- The pressure bar is a white bar located on the underside of the control panel.

 

c. Dampen a lint-free cloth with isopropyl alcohol.

 

d. Completely wipe down the white pressure bar and scanner glass.

 

- Run your finger over the white pressure bar and scanner glass.  If you feel any dirt or debris on the bar or scanner glass, concentrate on those areas when cleaning.

 

- Carefully examine the white pressure bar for scratches.

 

NOTE: Be careful not to bend the spring plate or drop anything into the machine.

 

 

e. Close the control panel.

 

4. Plug the power cord back in.

 

5. Plug the telephone cord back in.

 

- Wait for the LCD to return to date and time.

 

6. Make a copy of a document with black text:

 

a. Place the document face down in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).

 

b. Press the COPY key.

 

c. Press the COPY key again.

 

7. Do one of the following:

 

- If the copy looks normal, the issue is resolved.

 

- If the copy is poor quality and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by clicking on the link below:

PRINT HEAD AND RIBBON MAINTENANCE

 

1. Open the Brother machine's control panel by tilting it toward the front of the machine.

 

2. Lift the blue levers on both sides of the top cover to release it.

 

3. Lift the top cover toward the back of the machine.

 

 

4. Lift the ribbon cartridge out of the Brother machine.

 

 

5. Place the cartridge on a flat surface

 

- Inside the machine where the cartridge was previously installed, you will see a copper-colored strip with white triangles.  This is the print head.

 

6. Clean the print head using a lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

 

7. Verify the ribbon cartridge is installed correctly: 

 

- Hold the ribbon cartridge in the same position that it was in when it was inside the machine.

 

- The shiny side of the ribbon should be facing up and the dull side facing down.

 

- If the ribbon is not installed correctly, follow these steps:

 

a. Position the ribbon cartridge so that the black knobs are on the right-hand side and the white and blue knobs are on the left.

 

b. Lift the four knobs to remove the ribbon from the casing.

 

- Make sure the rollers do not roll off the surface you are working on once they are out of the casing.

 

c. Place the casing to the side and place the rolls horizontally on a flat surface.

 

d. Pull the four knobs out of the ends of the rolls. 

 

- There is one white knob, one blue knob, and two black knobs.

 

- The shiny roll should be in the front and the dull roll should be in the back. 

 

- The ribbon should go from the top of the dull roll to the bottom of the shiny roll.

 

e. Replace the knobs into the ends of the rolls:

 

i. Place the two black knobs into the right side of the rolls.

 

ii. Place the white and blue knobs into the left side of the rolls.

 

- The blue knob goes into the left end of the dull roll, which should be closest to you.

 

- The white knob goes into the left end of the shiny roll. 

 

- Make sure that the notches on the knobs fit into the slits on the end of the rolls.

 

f. Position the cartridge casing so that the indented arrow is closest to you. 

 

g. Place the dull roller in the holder furthest from you with the blue gear on the left side and snap it into place.

 

h. Place the shiny roll in the holder closest to you with the white gear on the left side and snap it into place.

 

i. Turn the cartridge over so that the white label is facing you. 

 

j. Turn the blue plastic gear on the side of the cartridge to remove any slack in the ribbon.

 

k. Place the cartridge in the machine with the indented arrow on the print cartridge pointing to the back of the machine.

 

l. Close the top cover.

 

m. Close the front cover.

 

8. Press REPORTS, 1 (Help List).

 

- If the Help List prints normally, the issue is resolved.

 

- If the Help List is poor quality and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by clicking on the link below:
