How do I clear a "Check Paper" message from the display?

The "Check Paper" message may appear on the Brother machine's display if the paper is not feeding properly.  Follow these steps to verify the paper is correctly loaded in the paper cassette:

 

1. Reseat the paper in the paper cassette:

 

a. Open the paper cassette cover by pulling it toward you.

 

b. Remove the paper from the paper cassette. 

 

c. Fan the paper.

 

d. Put the paper back into the paper cassette. 

 

e. Securely close the paper cassette cover. 

 

- Make sure the Recording Wire Extension is installed.

 

2. Test the machine by making three copies:

 

a. Place a document face down in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). 

 

b. Press the COPY key.

 

c. Press 0, 3.

 

d. Press the COPY key.

 

3. If paper is jammed, unplug the power cord. 

 

4. Check the machine for jammed paper:

 

a. Push down on the button located on the top right side of the machine between the paper cassette cover and the ADF. 

 

b. Check for jammed paper on the underside of the cover.

 

c. Do one of the following:

 

- If jammed paper is visible, go to STEP 6

 

- If the ribbon is jammed in the paper feed area or unwinds, go to STEP 8.

 

5. Pull the jammed paper gently from the top of the recording paper feeder toward the back of the machine. 

 

- If the paper remains jammed or if there is not enough paper sticking out of the recording paper feeder, pull the paper from inside the machine toward the front of the machine.  This will guide the paper along the paper path.

 

6. Securely close the cover and plug in the power cord. 

 

7. Once the LCD returns to date and time, follow these steps:

 

a. Place a document face down in the ADF. 

 

b. Press the COPY key.

 

c. Press 0, 3.

 

d. Press the COPY key.

 

- The machine should start copying.

 

- If the paper jams again, go to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.

 

- If the ribbon jams in the machine, go to STEP 8.

 

8. Follow these steps:

 

a. Open the Brother machine's control panel by tilting it toward the front of the machine.

b. Lift the blue levers on both sides of the top cover to release it.

 

c. Lift the top cover toward the back of the machine.

 

d. Carefully dislodge the jammed portion of the ribbon to prevent tearing. 

 

e. Use the black tabs on both sides of the print cartridge to lift the cartridge out of the machine.

 

f. Rewind the ribbon by turning the blue knob on the left-hand side of the cartridge counterclockwise. 

 

g. Reinstall the print cartridge.

 

h. Place a document face down in the ADF. 

 

i. Press the COPY key.

 

j. Press 0, 3.

 

k. Press the COPY key.

 

- The machine should start copying.

 

- If the "Check Paper" error reappears, go to STEP 9.

 

9. Verify the cartridge is positioned correctly:

 

a. Lift the cartridge out of the machine and hold it in the same position it was in when it was inside the machine. 

 

 

- The part of the cartridge casing furthest from you should have "brother" embossed on its left side, a white knob on its left side, and a ribbed triangle in the middle. 

 

- The part of the cartridge casing closest to you should be blank and have a blue knob on its left side.

 

10. Verify the ribbon is correctly oriented in the cartridge:

 

- Hold the ribbon cartridge in the same position that it was in when it was inside the machine.

 

- The shiny side of the ribbon should be facing up and the dull side facing down.

 

- If the ribbon is not installed correctly, follow these steps:

 

a. Position the ribbon cartridge so that the black knobs are on the right-hand side and the white and blue knobs are on the left.

 

b. Lift the four knobs to remove the ribbon from the casing.

 

- Make sure the rollers do not roll off the surface you are working on once they are out of the casing.

 

c. Place the casing to the side and place the rolls horizontally on a flat surface.

 

d. Pull the four knobs out of the ends of the rolls. 

 

- There is one white knob, one blue knob, and two black knobs.

 

- The shiny roll should be in the front and the dull roll should be in the back. 

 

- The ribbon should go from the top of the dull roll to the bottom of the shiny roll.

 

e. Replace the knobs into the ends of the rolls:

 

i. Place the two black knobs into the right side of the rolls.

 

ii. Place the white and blue knobs into the left side of the rolls.

 

- The blue knob goes into the left end of the dull roll, which should be closest to you.

 

- The white knob goes into the left end of the shiny roll. 

 

- Make sure that the notches on the knobs fit into the slits on the end of the rolls.

 

f. Position the cartridge casing so that the indented arrow is closest to you. 

 

g. Place the dull roller in the holder furthest from you with the blue gear on the left side and snap it into place.

 

h. Place the shiny roll in the holder closest to you with the white gear on the left side and snap it into place.

 

i. Turn the cartridge over so that the white label is facing you. 

 

j. Turn the blue plastic gear on the side of the cartridge to remove any slack in the ribbon.

 

k. Place the cartridge in the machine with the indented arrow on the print cartridge pointing to the back of the machine.

 

 

l. Close the top cover.

 

m. Close the front cover.

 

11. Once the LCD returns to date and time, follow these steps:

 

a. Place a document face down in the ADF. 

 

b. Press the COPY key.

 

c. Press 0, 3.

 

d. Press the COPY key.

 

- The machine should start copying.

 

- If the problem continues, go to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.
