Description of Solution 200000008998

Before you can clear a "Paper Jam" error, you must locate where in the unit the paper is jammed.

First, unplug the power cord for safety.  Do not plug the power cord back in until you have completed the steps for removing jammed paper in the appropriate area of the machine.

Next, follow these instructions based on where the paper jam is located.

Paper is Jammed in the Multi-purpose Paper Cassette:

1. Pull the paper cassette out of the machine.

2. Remove any crinkled sheets.

3. Remove the paper in the cassette. Verify paper meets the paper specifications - Recording Paper Size: Letter, Legal or  A4. Adjust the paper guides to fit the paper size you are using. Fan the paper well.  Press down the paper to flatten it in the paper cassette. The cassette can hold up to 250 sheets (20lb paper).

4. Reinstall the paper cassette.

5. Plug the power cord back in.

6. Test by pressing the REPORTS key located on the control panel and then 1 on the dial pad.  If the issue continues, refer to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.

Paper is Jammed near the Drum Unit:

1. Open the front cover (the front face of the unit below the paper ejection tray by pulling the tabs on both sides of the unit towards you.

2. Remove the drum unit by lifting it slightly and pulling it out.  Do not force it if it does not come out easily.  Instead, pull the edge of the jammed paper from the paper cassette.

3. If the drum is able to be removed, gently pull out the jammed paper.

4. Remove the toner from the drum by holding down the lock lever (blue tab) on the right side of the drum unit and lift the toner out.  *Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.

5. Remove any small pieces of paper jammed inside the drum.

NOTE: This is an important step. Look very carefully for any small piece of paper that may be stuck in the drum.

6. Reinstall the toner into the drum.

7. Reinstall the drum unit into the Brother machine.

8. Close the front cover, pressing firmly on each side until the cover clicks into place.

9. Pull the paper cassette out of the machine.  Verify the paper meets the paper specifications - Recording Paper Size: Letter, Legal or  A4. Adjust the guides to fit the paper size you are using. Press down the paper to flatten it in the paper cassette. The cassette can hold up to 250 sheets (20lb paper).

10. Reinstall the paper cassette.

11. Plug the power cord back in.

12. Test by pressing the REPORTS key located on the control panel and then 1 on the dial pad.  If the issue continues, refer to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.

Paper is Jammed in the Fuser Unit:

1. This needs to be removed from the back of the unit.  Open the rear cover (the rounded portion of the back of the unit).

2. Pull out any jammed paper.

3. Close the rear cover.

NOTE: When you have to pull paper from the back of the machine, the fuser may get dirty with toner powder causing the next few printed page(s) to look messy.  Once the unit is reset, make several copies of a blank sheet of paper to resolve this issue.
