How do I improve the print quality?

Description of Solution 200000009261

You must first determine if the problem is related to the print head or the scanner.

To test the print head, print the Help List by pressing the QUICK SCAN/REPORTS key and then 1 on the dial pad.

-         If the print quality of the Help List is good, go to SCANNER MAINTENANCE below.

-         If the print quality of the Help List is poor go to PRINTING MAINTENANCE below.

SCANNER MAINTENANCE

1. Unplug the telephone line and then the power cord.  Be sure to do it in that order.

2. Clean the Scanner Glass and White Roller by doing the following:

a. Lift up the Control Panel (the panel with the keypad) from the front. It will open approximately 3 inches.

-         The white roller is about nine inches long and is located in the front of the machine.

-         The scanner glass is the glass strip is located directly below the roller.

b. Pull the black tabs at each end of the roller forward. The release of the black tabs allows the roller to lift approximately 3/8 of an inch off the scanner glass.

c. Dampen a lint-free cloth or cotton swab with Isopropyl alcohol and gently wipe down the roller and glass. Carefully examine the glass to identify any dirt or debris (correction fluid is common) on the glass.

d. After cleaning, push the levers back to lock them back in place and close the Control Panel.

3. Plug the power cord back in and then the telephone line.  Wait for the LCD to return to date and time.

4. Close the cover.

5. Once the LCD returns to date and time, test the unit by making a copy of a document with black text. To make a copy, place the document face down in the ADF and press the COPY key.

If the copy is still poor, and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by clicking on the link below:

PRINTING MAINTENANCE

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only Brother ribbon refills or ribbon cartridges for best results. Each Brother thermal transfer Fax or multifunction product is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our ribbons.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party ribbons.

1. Unplug the telephone line and then the power cord; be sure to do it in that order.

2. Open the top cover by pressing the button located on the right side of the Brother machine in front of the recording paper tray.

3. Remove the ribbon cartridge by lifting it out of the Brother machine.

4. In the base of the Brother machine (where the ribbon was installed) you will see a copper colored strip with white triangles.  This is the print head. Clean the print head using isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

5. Reinstall the ribbon cartridge into the unit.

6. Close and lock the top cover.

7. Plug the power cord back in and then the telephone line.  Wait for the LCD to return to date and time.

8. Print the Help List to test by pressing the QUICK SCAN/REPORTS key and then 1 on the dial pad.

9. If the print is still poor, open the top cover and remove the ribbon cartridge again.

10. Hold it in the same position it was in when you had it in the unit.  Place the cartridge on a flat surface. The ribbon has a dull side and a shiny side. The dull side should be facing up and the shiny side facing down. If the ribbon is not installed correctly follow the steps listed below:

a. Turn the ribbon around by first removing the ribbon from the cartridge. On each end of the roller casing, there are black tabs.  Pull the black tabs off the notches to pop open the casing.  Be careful that the rollers do not roll off the surface you are working on once they are out of the casing.

b. Place the casing to the side and place the rolls horizontally on a flat surface.

c. Pull the 4 knobs out of the ends of the rolls.  There is one white knob, one blue knob and 2 black knobs.

d. The roller that is dull is to be in the front and the shiny roller is to be in the back.  The ribbon should go from the top of the shiny roll down to the bottom of the dull roll.

e. Replace the knobs into the ends of the rolls by placing the two black knobs into the right side of the rollers and the white and blue ones into the left side of the rollers.  The blue knob goes into the left end of the roller closest to you (dull).  Make sure that the notches on the knobs fit into the slits on the end of the rollers.

f. Next, take the plastic casing so that "brother" and the ribbed triangle are the furthest away from you.  Place the shiny roll with the white and black knobs into the side of the cartridge marked "brother" and lock the tabs into place.  Now, place the dull roll with the blue and black knobs into the blank side of the casing.  Again, lock the tabs into place.

g. Place the cartridge back into the unit with the blue knob on the bottom left side.  Close the cover.

11. Print the Help List to test by pressing the QUICK SCAN/REPORTS key and then 1 on the dial pad.
