How do I clear vertical lines, streaks, or smudges that appear on printed documents?

Description of Solution 200000016173

Print a test page from your computer of a document that previously had the lines or streaks.

Compare the test print with the samples below to determine what type of line is on the page (A=Solid, well defined lines, or B=smudgy, smeared lines).

A = Solid, well defined line

B = Smudged, Smeared line

-      Type A: If the line(s) is a straight, well defined line, go to Procedure A: Cleaning the Corona Wires inside the Drum.

-      Type B: If the line(s) is not well defined and looks more like a smear mark, go to Procedure B: Toner Cartridge Inspection.

Procedure A: Cleaning the Corona Wires Inside the Drum:

1.    Remove each color toner (black, yellow, cyan, magenta) that is causing the print quality issue.

a.    Press the front cover release button located above the Brother logo and open the front cover.

b.    Lift up on the green handle, pull toward you, and slide out the drum unit until it stops. (The green handle has a sticker of a black circle with a white number 1 on it).

c.    Remove each color toner cartridge causing the print quality issue by grasping the color handle and pulling straight up on the cartridge you want to remove.  If there are multiple toners, remove them one at a time.

d.    Place the cartridge(s) on a flat surface so the colored handle is facing you and the Brother logo molded into the top of the cartridge is visible.

NOTE: We recommend placing the toner cartridge(s) on a clean, flat surface with a piece of disposable paper underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.  Handle the toner cartridge(s) carefully.  If toner scatters on hands or clothing, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water.

2.    Clean the corona wire(s):

a.    In the area where the toner cartridge(s) was installed, lift the white plastic corona wire cover for each toner causing the print quality issue by lifting the tabs located on the right and left side of the cover(s).

b.    Inspect the area around the corona(s) and drum for paper scraps or other foreign material. Remove foreign material (if any).

c.    Clean the corona wire(s) inside the drum unit(s) for each color causing the print quality issue by gently sliding the green tab from right to left several times.

NOTE: Be sure to return the tab to the home position (left side). If the tab is not returned to its home position, the white corona wire cover will not close.

d.    Close the corona wire cover(s).

NOTE: Be sure to do STEPS a - d for each of the toners causing the print quality issue.  Then, go to STEP 3.

3.    Reinstall the toner cartridge(s) by holding the handle of the toner cartridge and sliding the toner cartridge(s) into the drum unit. Match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the drum unit and fold down the toner cartridge handle (A) once the toner cartridge is in place.

NOTE: Repeat this for all the toner cartridges removed from the drum.

4.    Push the drum unit in until it stops and close the front cover of the machine.

5.    Print another test page from the computer of a document that previously had the lines or streaks.

-      If the test page looks fine, the issue has been resolved.

-      If there is still a print quality issue, repeat STEPS 1 – 5 to clean the corona wires again.  We have found multiple cleanings resolves the issue.

-      If there is still a print quality issue after cleaning the corona wire(s) multiple times, do the following:
