How do I clear black vertical lines appearing on the faxes I send and copies I make?

Description of Solution 200000016694

These types of lines are typically caused by dirt or white out on the scanner unit. If using white out on documents that you will copy or fax please clean off any excess white out from the document.

To clear these lines, follow the instructions listed below:

1. Unplug the telephone line and then the power cord.  Be sure to do it in that order.

2. Open the top cover by lifting the lever on the front of the fax machine.

3. The pressure bar is located on the underside of the cover in the front. The scanner glass strip is located directly below the pressure bar in the base of the machine located under and slightly above the white pressure bar.

-         Dampen a lint-free cloth with the isopropyl alcohol and wipe the white strip on the pressure bar and the scanner glass. The scanner glass is an eight inch strip of glass that is located under and slightly above the white pressure bar. Only a small portion of the scanner can be cleaned. Cleaning the scanner and white bar will clear any debris causing vertical lines.

4. Close the cover making sure that it latches on both sides.

5. Plug the power cord back in and then the telephone line.  Wait for the LCD to return to date and time.

6. Test the machine by making a copy of a blank sheet of white paper.  To make a copy, place the sheet in the document feed and press COPY. Wait a few seconds and the machine will automatically start copying.

7. If the black vertical lines continue to appear on the copied sheet, repeat the cleaning process.

-         Again, be sure to unplug the telephone line and then the power cord.

-         In addition to cleaning the scanner glass with alcohol, run your fingertip over the glass to see if you can feel anything on it.  If you feel any debris stuck on the glass, clean the glass again concentrating on that area. The scanner glass is an eight inch strip of glass that is located under and slightly above the white pressure bar. Only a small portion of the scanner can be cleaned. Cleaning the scanner and white bar will clear any debris causing vertical lines.

-         You may have to repeat the cleaning process 3 or 4 times to eliminate all dirt or debris on the glass.

-         After each cleaning, be sure to plug in the power cord followed by the telephone line.  Then, make a copy to test.
