All the documents I print on my Brother machine have a gray background or wide gray vertical lines on the left and/or right side of the page. What can I do?

Description of Solution 200000019620

If you have a gray background on printing or copying, cleaning the laser glass or replacing the toner may resolve this problem.

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

1. Clean the laser glass.

a. Turn off the machines power switch located on the right side of the machine.  Unplug the power cord from the AC power outlet.

b. Open the front cover.

c. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out. Place the drum unit on a drop cloth or large piece of disposable paper to avoid spilling and scattering the toner.

d. The laser glass is located inside the machine where the drum was installed. It is a piece of glass, about 1/2 inch wide and approximately 8 inches long, located on the top of the opening. Gently wipe the glass with a clean soft DRY cloth. DO NOT use isopropyl alcohol or any liquid to clean the glass.

e. Reseat the drum unit into the unit pressing it in securely.

f. Close the front cover making sure it latches on both sides.

g. Plug the machine back into the power outlet and turn on the power switch.

*Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.
