How do I clear the message "Print Unable 32" or "Machine Error 32" from the display?

Description of Solution 200000019633

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.

The message PRINT UNABLE 32 or MACHINE ERROR 32 can appear on the display for the following situations if there is paper or labels stuck under the drum or on the side of the drum unit.

To verify if paper or a label is stuck, follow the steps below:

1.    Turn off the machine's power switch located on the right side of the machine.

2.    Press the front cover release button and open the front cover.

3.    Hold the green handle of the drum unit, lift the drum unit up and slide it out until it stops. (The green handle has a sticker of a black circle with a white number 1 on it).

4.    Release the gray lock lever (1) on the left side of the machine, lift the front of the drum unit and, using the green handles, pull the drum unit completely out of the machine.

NOTE: Always hold the green handles when carrying the drum.  Do NOT hold the sides of the drum unit.  Be sure to place the drum unit on a clean, flat surface on top of a piece of disposable paper in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

5.    After the drum unit has been removed, carefully look inside the machine and see if there is any paper, scraps of paper or labels, especially towards the back of the machine.  If any are found, remove them from the machine.

6.    Remove each toner cartridge one at a time by holding the handle of the cartridge and pulling it out of the drum unit.

NOTE: Handle toner cartridge carefully.  Be sure to place the toner cartridges on a clean, flat surface on top of a piece of disposable paper in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.  If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wipe or wash it off with cold water.

7.    There are four open slots on the drum unit where the toner cartridges were installed.  Examine the openings and the black roller in each slot for pieces of paper or labels.  If any is found, remove them.

8.    Turn the drum unit over and check for pieces of paper or labels that may be stuck in or on the black rollers. If any is found, carefully remove it.

9.    Inside the machine where the drum was installed, remove the transfer belt unit by holding the green parts of the belt unit with both hands, lifting the belt unit up and then pulling it out.

NOTE: Be sure to place the belt unit on a clean, flat surface with a piece of disposable paper underneath it in case toner is accidentally spilled or scattered.

10. Inspect the belt for foreign material, paper, toner, etc.  Rotate the belt using the gear with grooves/cutouts located toward the back right hand side and remove any foreign material.  Clean off any loose toner with a soft dry cloth.

NOTE: Be sure to rotate the gear enough times to inspect the entire surface of the belt.

11. Next, in the machine where the belt unit was installed, you will find the waste toner box.  Remove the waste toner box from the machine using the green handle.

12. Look inside the machine and see if there are any scrap pieces of paper towards the back. If anything is found, remove it.

NOTE: There is rectangle white paper taped on the bottom of the machine. DO NOT REMOVE THE PAPER.

13. Reassemble the machine.

a.    Reinstall the waste toner box into the machine using the green handle.

b.    Put the belt unit back in the machine. Match the down arrow mark on the belt unit to the down arrow mark on the machine. Push down on the green area of the belt unit to lock it in place.

14. Turn the drum unit back over and reinstall each toner cartridge by holding the handle of the cartridge and sliding it into the drum unit.  Match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the drum unit and be sure to fold down each toner cartridge handle (A) once the toner cartridge is in place.

15. Make sure the gray lock lever (1) is in the up position.

16. Put the drum unit in the machine and push down the gray lock lever.

NOTE: When you put the drum unit in the machine, match the green guides of the drum unit handle to the green arrows on both sides of the machine.

17. Push the drum unit in until it stops and close the front cover.

18. Power the Brother machine back on and confirm if the error message reappears.

If the message no longer appears and the display returns to date and time, the issue is resolved.
