How do I configure the wireless printer and install the driver WITHOUT a CD on a wireless Windows XP PC?

Description of Solution 200000021125

For successful wireless setup, you MUST know your network security settings.

STEP I: Gather the wireless network settings of your wireless access point or wireless router

The network settings information for your network can be found on the network configuration sheet of your wireless access point or wireless router. Please contact the manufacturer of your wireless access point or wireless router or refer to the user's guide for your wireless access point or wireless router for instructions on printing a network configuration sheet.

This information includes:

A. SSID (Service Set ID or Network Name). Your access point or router is identified by an SSID or network name.

B. Authentication Method required by your access point or router. For example, Open System, Shared Key, WPA-PSK, LEAP, etc.

NOTE: This model does NOT support WPA2, although it will often work with wireless routers that allow setting Authentication Method to "WPA/WPA2".  The printer was designed before WPA2 was available.

C. If you are using WEP Encryption Mode, you will need the WEP KEY (in HEX key format). For example, a 64-bit key uses 10 digits of hexadecimal data: i.e. 71f2234aba, while a 128-bit key uses 26 digits of hexadecimal data: i.e. 71f2234ab56cd709e5412aa3ba.

D. If you are using WPA-PSK (TKIP) Encryption Mode, you will need the PASSPHRASE. For routers that use a Pre-Shared Key (PSK), the PASSPHRASE is more than 7 characters and less than 64 characters in length.

E. If you are using MAC (Media Access Control) Filtering/MAC Address Access Control on your router, add the printer's MAC Address to the table.

NOTE: If you do not have this network settings information, or cannot find this information, do not proceed with the wireless setup. Contact the manufacturer of your wireless access point or wireless router for this network information.

STEP II: Factory reset the printer

1. Press the MINUS key two times to select Reset Menu. Press the SET key.

2. Press the MINUS key one time to select Factory Reset. Press the SET key two times.

3. Wait until Ready is displayed.

STEP III: Reset the network cards

1. Press the MINUS key four times to select Network. Press the SET key.

2. Press the MINUS key one time to select Factory Reset. Press the SET key two times.

3. Wait until Ready is displayed.

STEP IV: Print out the Printer Settings pages to determine printer's IP Address

Wait 1 full minute to allow the printer's wireless network card to initialize.

1. Press the SET key 3 times. A four page Printer Settings report will print.

2. On page 4, towards the center of this the page, locate the IP address. Confirm the IP Address begins with 169.254.x.x (where x are random numbers). If the IP Address does not begin with 169.254.x.x, repeat STEPS II and III. Wait 3-5 minutes, and then print out the Printer Settings again to check the IP Address.

3. Lower down on the page, confirm the SSID is SETUP and wireless link status reads "Link OK". If the SSID is not SETUP or the wireless link status is not Link OK, repeat STEPS II and III. Wait 3-5 minutes, and then print out the Printer Settings again to check the SSID and wireless link status.

STEP V: Communicate with the printer WITHOUT a network cable and configure the wireless settings

To communicate with the printer in Ad-hoc mode, the wireless computer needs to join the printer's SETUP network.

NOTE: If you are using a third party utility to manage your wireless connections, contact the manufacturer for assistance with the following steps.

1. Click Start => Control Panel => Network Connections.

2. Right mouse click Wireless Network Connection. Left mouse click View Available Wireless Networks.

3. In the list, click on the name of the Brother Ad-hoc network. The default name is SETUP. Select SETUP and check the Allow me to connect... check box. Click the Connect button.

4. Check the IP Address of your computer.

a. Click Start => Run. Type in CMD and press the Enter key. A black DOS screen will appear.

b. Type IPCONFIG /all and press the Enter key.

c. You may see more than one Local Connection listed. Look for a Local Area Connection with a description of the network card indicating WIRELESS.

d. Locate the IP Address. This number should be similar to the IP Address of the printer. The printer's IP Address can be found on the Printer Settings pages you printed out previously. The first two sets of numbers should be the same.

For example:

Computer IP Address is: 169.254.x.x   Printer IP Address is: 169.254.x.x

NOTE: If these numbers are not similar (not in the same range), return to Step III to perform a factory reset on the printer network card. After the network card is reset, wait one minute, and then press the GO button 3 times to print the settings pages. Review the last page for the printer IP address again. If the printer IP address is not similar to the computer IP address, do NOT proceed with wireless setup. Contact your network administrator for assistance following these setup instructions.

e. If the IP Address of the computer and the IP Address of the printer are in the same range, go to the next step.

STEP VI: Configure the printer's wireless settings

1. Open an Internet web browser. Enter the IP Address of the printer into the web browser screen and press the Enter key. The Brother Web Management screen will appear.

2. Click on Network Configuration near the top of the screen.

3.  A login screen will appear. Enter the following: Username: admin. Password: access. Then click OK.

4.  Click Configure Wireless.

5. Select "Infrastructure" for Communication Mode.

6. Click Browse next to the Wireless Network Name (SSID).

7. Select the appropriate SSID of your network from the list and click OK. Refer to the network settings information gathered in Step I.

8. Leave the Channel setting as is.

9. Select the appropriate Authentication Method from the drop down list.

10. Select the appropriate Encryption Method from the drop down list.

NOTE: If WEP is selected as the Encryption Method, enter the hex code for the WEP Key 1. There is no need to enter the Passphrase for WEP Encryption.

NOTE: If using an Authentication Method other than Open or Shared is selected, then a Passphrase must be entered on the Passphrase line.

11. Confirm all values.  If all values are correct, click Submit to update the printer with your wireless settings. The computer should display a screen indicating the settings have been updated successfully.

12. The printer will print two pages. On page 2, towards the bottom of the page, locate "wireless link status".

- If the wireless link status is OK, check that the SSID is the name of your wireless network and other values such as Communication Mode, encryption mode, authentication method are all correct.  If they are correct, please continue to the NEXT STEP to install the printer driver and keep this page as a reference as we will need to refer to it later.

- If the wireless link status reads "failed to associate", confirm all settings provided to the printer match the settings of your wireless network.

13. Reconnect your computer to your wireless access point or wireless router (ie: Re-establish the wireless connection between the PC and the original wireless network/access point).
