How do I clear the message "Check Paper" from the display?

Description of Solution 200000021628

To clear the message "Check Paper" follow the steps listed below:

1.    Verify paper is loaded in the paper tray.

a. Make sure the Recording Wire Extension is installed on the paper cassette.

b. Open the paper cassette cover by pulling it toward you and remove the paper.  Fan the paper and reinsert it into the cassette.  Securely close the paper cassette cover.

2. Test the machine by making 2 or 3 copies:

a. Place a document face down in the feeder.

b. Press COPY and then 2 or 3 to indicate the number of copies and then press COPY again.  Wait a few seconds and the machine will automatically start copying.

3. If the problem continues check the following:

a. If paper is jammed, unplug the power cord.

b. Open the recording paper cover by pushing down on the button located on the top right side of the unit between the paper cassette cover and the automatic document feeder. Check for jammed paper on the underside of the cover.

-  If jammed paper is visible continue to STEP c.

-  If the ribbon is jammed in the paper feed area or unwinds, go to STEP e.

c. Pull the jammed paper gently from the top of the recording paper feeder toward the back of the machine.

If the paper remains jammed or if there is not enough paper sticking out of the recording paper feeder,, open the front cover and release the levers on both sides. Pull the paper from inside the machine toward the front of the machine.  This will guide the paper along the paper path.

d. If you opened the front cover, close the cover securely and plug in the power cord.  Once the LCD returns to date and time go to STEP 4.

e. Open the recording paper cover by pushing down on the button located on the top right side of the unit between the paper cassette cover and the automatic document feeder.

f. Carefully remove the ribbon to prevent tearing.  Next, take the cartridge out of the unit (PC201) by lifting it out using the black tabs on both sides of the cartridge.

g. Rewind the ribbon by turning the blue knob on the left side of the cartridge counterclockwise or away from you.  Turn the blue knob until there is not any slack in the ribbon.

h. Reinstall the cartridge.  Close the cover securely and plug in the power cord. Once the LCD returns to date and time go to STEP 4.

4. Make 3 copies to test.

a. Place a document face down into the ADF, top edge first.

b. Press COPY and then the number 3 on the control panel and then press COPY again

5. If the message Check Paper to appear on the LCD, Open the recording paper cover by pushing down on the button located on the top right side of the unit between the paper cassette cover and the automatic document feeder. Lift the cartridge out of the unit and hold it in the same position it was in when you had it in the unit.

6. If you have used a ribbon refill and you are not sure if it installed correctly refer to STEPS 7 through 13 or you can click here to view a video with step by step instructions for installing a ribbon refill.

If you did not use a ribbon refill go to STEP 14.

7. Verify that the cartridge and the ribbon are positioned correctly.  The part of the cartridge casing that should be the furthest from you should have "brother" appearing on the left side and a ribbed triangle in the middle.  This is also the part of the cartridge with the white knob on the left side.  The part of the cartridge closest to you is a blank rectangle with a blue knob on the left side of the casing.

8.  Check how the ribbon is wound on the rollers.  The ribbon should feed from the top of the back roller (the one with the white knob) to the underside of the front roller (the one with the blue knob).  If the ribbon does not appear to be in the cartridge correctly, remove the ribbon from the casing.

9. On each end of the roller casing, there are black tabs.  Pull the black tabs off the notches to pop open the casing.  Be careful that the rollers do not roll off the surface you are working on once they are out of the casing.  Place the casing to the side and place the rolls horizontally on a flat surface.

10. Pull the 4 knobs out of the ends of the rolls.  There is one white knob, one blue knob and 2 black knobs. The roller that is dull is to be in the front and the shiny roller is to be in the back.  The ribbon should go from the top of the shiny roll down to the bottom of the dull roll.

11. Replace the knobs into the ends of the rolls by placing the two black knobs into the right side of the rollers and the white and blue ones into the left side of the rollers.  The blue knob goes into the left end of the roller closest to you (dull).  Make sure that the notches on the knobs fit into the slits on the end of the rollers.

12. Take the plastic casing so that "brother" and the ribbed triangle are the furthest away from you.  Place the shiny roll with the white and black knobs into the side of the cartridge marked "brother" and lock the tabs into place.  Now, place the dull roll with the blue and black knobs into the blank side of the casing.

13. Lock the tabs into place.

14. Place the cartridge back into the unit with the blue knob on the bottom left side.

15. Close the cover.

16. Once the LCD returns to date and time, test the unit by making 2 or 3 copies (see STEP 4).

If the unit continues to display "CHECK PAPER", replace the print cartridge with a new cartridge (PC201) once the new cartridge is installed, test the unit by making 2 or 3 copies (see STEP 6).
