Description of Problem 100000017840

The printed pages have black vertical lines or streaks. How can I improve the print quality?

Description of Solution 200000022763

If you have black vertical lines or steaks when printing, verifying the paper you are using meets the recommended paper specifications, checking the printer's environment, cleaning the laser glass and drum corona wire, and/or replacing the toner and/or drum may resolve this problem. This issue can also be caused by using a non-Brother drum or toner.

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

1. Verify the paper you are using meets the recommended paper specifications.

Recommended Paper:

Plain paper = Xerox 4200DP 20 lb or Hammermill Laser Paper 24 lb

Recycled paper = Paper that meets DIN 19309 specification

Transparency: 3M CG 3300

Labels: Avery laser label #5160

Use paper that is made for plain paper copying.

Use paper that is 20 to 24 lb (75 to 90 g/m2).

Use neutral paper; do not use acidic or alkaline paper.

Use long grain paper.

Use paper with moisture content of approximately 5%.

2. Check the printer's environment. High temperatures and high humidity can cause this issue. The Brother machine should be operated within the following ranges: temperature 50 to 90.5 F; humidity 20% to 80% without condensation.

3. Follow the step listed below for cleaning the laser glass and drum corona wire.

a. Turn OFF the machine's power switch (located on the right side of the machine). Unplug the power cord from the wall.

b. Press the front cover release button on the top of the printer and pull down the front cover.

c. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out.

NOTE: Place the drum unit on a piece of disposable paper or cloth to avoid spilling and scattering the toner.

d.  Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the lock lever (blue tab) on the right side of the drum unit and lift the toner out.

e.  Inspect and clean the drum unit.  Typically more than one cleaning is required to fully remove material stuck to the drum surface.  Because of the multiple cleanings, this process takes some time to complete.  Items required for cleaning the drum are clean blank white paper and the following:

-  Alcohol Swab, such as a medical alcohol pad or wipe, which can be found at a local retail pharmacy or first aid kit.

OR

-  Cotton Swab lightly moistened with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.

As a precaution please note: Isopropyl alcohol is flammable and should be kept away from fire or flame.  As stated, this cleaning process typically has to be repeated several times to remove certain kinds of foreign material from the drum unit surface.

f.  Take your print sample and put it in front of the drum (see image below) to find the area of the drum that may be causing the black vertical lines.

g.  Turn the drum unit gear toward you by hand and look for any marks or material on the drum surface.  Turning the drum gear will ensure you inspect the entire drum surface.

NOTE: The drum is photosensitive and should not be touched directly by your fingers or hand as it will apply body oils to the drum surface.

h.  When you find the area on the drum that matches the print sample, gently wipe the surface of the drum with the alcohol swab or cotton swab lightly moistened with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.

NOTE: If physical damage, such as scratches, nicks or gashes in the surface of the drum, is found when inspecting the drum, there is no need to continue cleaning since it will not resolve the issue.  Go to STEP 8.

NOTE: DO NOT clean the surface of the drum with any sharp object.

i.  Before continuing further, allow the alcohol to evaporate or dry off the drum surface.  In some cases there may be several areas on a drum that need cleaning.

j.  When finished cleaning the drum, put the toner cartridge back into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put the cartridge in properly, the blue lock lever will lift automatically.

k. While the drum is out of the machine, locate and clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab on the top of the cartridge from right to left several times. Return the blue tab to the home position (1) until it clicks into place. If you do not return the blue tab to the home position, printed pages will have a stripe down the page.

l. Reseat the drum unit into the printer pressing it in securely.

m. Close the front cover making sure it latches on both sides.

n. Plug the printer into the wall outlet and turn on the power switch.

4. Print the Print Settings by pressing the GO button on the printer three times.

- If the print quality is good, the issue is resolved.

- If the pages have black vertical lines or steaks, continue to STEP 5.

5. Replace the TN620 or TN650 toner cartridge by following the instructions listed below.

a. Turn OFF the machine's power switch (located on the right side of the machine). Unplug the power cord from the wall.

b. Press the front cover release button on the top of the printer and pull down the front cover.

c. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out. Place the drum unit on a piece of disposable paper or cloth to avoid spilling and scattering the toner.

d. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the lock lever (blue tab) on the right side of the drum unit and lift the toner out.

NOTE: Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.

e. Unpack the new toner cartridge.

f. Gently rock the toner cartridge from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

g. Remove the yellow protective cover from the toner cartridge.

h. Place the toner cartridge into the drum (be sure it clicks into place). If you put the cartridge in properly, the blue lock lever will lift automatically.
