How do I clear the message "Document Jam"?

Description of Solution 200000022818

This error can occur if a document in the automatic document feeder (ADF) was loaded or fed improperly or was too long.

In order to clear a "Document Jam" message, you must first remove the jammed document.

1.  Remove any paper from the ADF that is not jammed.

2.  Open the ADF cover.

3.  Carefully remove the jammed document by pulling it to the left side.

- Do not pull the document to the right.  If the document cannot be pulled to the left, leave the ADF cover open and press the STOP/EXIT key.  This will feed the document far enough so that it can be pulled to the left.

4.  Check for and remove any small pieces of paper or other objects stuck in the ADF.  Any object in the ADF will cause a document jam.

5.  Close the ADF cover.

6.  Lift the document cover and pull out any jammed documents to the right. Again, carefully check for and remove any small pieces of paper or other objects.

7.  Close the document cover.

8.  Press STOP/EXIT.

9.    Verify the "Document Jam" message is no longer displayed on the LCD.

- If the "Document Jam" message has cleared, continue to STEP 10.

- If the error message continues to appear on the LCD and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by clicking on the link below:

10. Load a test document into the ADF.

a. Verify the ADF document support (located on the top of the ADF) is pulled out.

b. Verify the documents are between 5.8 to 8.5 inches wide and 5.8 to 14 inches long.

c. Make sure the documents are inserted face up in the ADF, top edge first.

d. The ADF can hold up to 50 pages and feeds each sheet individually.

e. Use standard 20 lb (80 g/m2) paper.

f. Always fan the pages before putting them in the ADF.

g. DO NOT use paper that is curled, wrinkled, folded, ripped, stapled, paper-clipped, pasted or taped.

h. DO NOT use cardboard, newspaper or fabric.

i. Make sure documents written with ink are completely dry.

11. Adjust the paper guides to fit the width of the documents. The guides should touch the sides of the paper without applying pressure. This ensures the documents will feed straight, preventing jams.

12. Press COPY and then press START.

13. If the problem continues and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by clicking on the link below:
