How do I clear white vertical lines or streaks on printed documents?

Description of Solution 200000023847

White vertical lines or streaks can be caused by a dirty or clouded LED head, or dust or glue on the drum surface.  To identify if the LED head or drum could be causing the issue, follow steps below.

1. Click on link below to open and print a test document. The document that is printed has 4 diagonal black, yellow, magenta, and cyan colored lines.

Review the printed document to identify which color is missing. For example, if the white line or streak is only going through the cyan color line, then the LED head and drum unit for cyan color needs to be cleaned.

2. Clean the LED head.

a.    Turn off the printer power switch located on the right side of the printer.

b.    Lift the top cover using the indented handle in the center until you hear a click.

c. The LED heads are located on the top cover. There are 4 LED heads, one for each color.  When the top cover is completely opened the 4 LED's are locked in a slanted position. To clean the LED, lower the top cover slightly down so the 4 LED's move to a vertical position.

d. Clean the LED that is causing the problem as identified from the test pattern. Locate the white color piece that has a barcode sticker on the right side; wipe the bottom of that piece using a soft dry, lint-free cloth. The black color LED is closest to the front of the machine, followed by yellow, magenta, and cyan.

NOTE: Be careful not to touch the bottom of LED head with your fingers.

e. Close the top cover of the machine. You will hear a loud click when the top cover is closed firmly. Turn on the printer power switch located on the right side of the printer.

f.   Print your document again. If the problem continues, go to the next step to clean the drum unit.

3. Clean the drum unit.

a.    Turn the printer off using the power switch on the right side of the printer.

b.    Lift the top cover using the indented handle in the center until you hear a click.

c.    Take out one of the drum unit and toner cartridge assemblies. The drum unit and toner cartridge assembly can be removed by grasping the center of the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly and pulling it straight up.

NOTE: We recommend that you place the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a clean flat surface with a sheet of disposable paper or cloth underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

d.    Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab on the top of the cartridge from left to right several times. Return the green tab to the home position.

e. Push down the green-labeled lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

f.     Turn the drum unit gear which is located on the left side with your thumb or finger while also looking at the surface of the drum unit for any dust, label, or glue like substance on the drum unit roller.

g.    If foreign material is stuck on the drum unit roller such as dust, label, or a glue-like substance, wipe the surface of the drum with a dry cotton swab until the dust or glue on the surface comes off. If they are unable to locate any dust or glue on the surface, still go ahead and wipe the drum surface with a dry cotton swab.

h. Put the toner cartridge back firmly into the drum unit. You will hear it lock into place.

i.   Reinstall the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into the machine by sliding it into the correct slot by matching the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the machine.

j.   Repeat STEPS c through i to clean all 4 drum unit assemblies.

k. When you have completed the cleaning of the 4 drum units, close the top cover of the machine. You will hear a loud click when the top cover is closed firmly. Turn the printer on using the power switch on the right side of the printer.
