How do I clear the message "Replace Drum (K)"?

Description of Solution 200000023968

The message "Replace Drum (K)" will appear on the display of the Brother machine when the black drum unit has reached the end of its life and needs to be replaced. The machine will continue to print, however, if the drum unit is not replaced you may have a print quality issue and the machine may eventually display a "Drum Error" message. At that point the machine will stop printing until the drum unit is replaced.

There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used, and so on. Under ideal conditions, the average drum life is estimated at approximately 15,000 pages. The actual number of pages that your drum will print may be significantly less than this estimate.  Since we have no control over the many factors that determine the actual drum life, we cannot guarantee a minimum number of pages that will be printed by your drum.

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.

The part number for the black drum unit is DR210CLBK. The drums can also be replaced as a set (black, yellow, magenta, and cyan) - part number DR210CL.

1. Turn off the power switch located on the right side of the machine. Fully open the top cover by lifting up on the handle (1).

NOTE:  If the cover is not completely opened, the drum unit may be difficult or impossible to remove from the machine.

2. Take out the black drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.

3. Push down the green-labeled lock lever (1) and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

- DO NOT put a toner cartridge into a fire. It could explode, resulting in injuries.

- DO NOT use cleaning materials that contain ammonia, alcohol, any type of spray, or any type of flammable substance to clean the outside or inside of the machine. Doing this may cause a fire or electric shock.

- DO NOT inhale the toner.

- We recommend that you place the drum and toner cartridge assembly on a clean, flat surface with a sheet of disposable paper or cloth underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

- To prevent damage to the machine from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes on the inside of the machine.

- Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If the toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold water at once.

- To avoid print problems, DO NOT touch the roller on the toner cartridge or on the shinny drum surface.

- Be sure to seal up the drum unit tightly in a suitable bag so that toner powder does not spill out of the cartridge.

- Go to for instructions on how to return the used drum to the Brother collection program. If you choose not to return your used drum, please discard the used drum according to local regulations, keeping it separate from domestic waste. If you have questions, call your local waste disposal office.

4. Unpack the new drum unit and pull off the protective cover.

NOTE: Wait to unpack the drum unit until immediately before you put it in the machine. Exposure to direct sunlight or room light may damage the drum unit.

5. Put the toner cartridge firmly into the new drum unit until you hear it lock into place.

NOTE: Make sure that you re-install the toner cartridge properly, or it may separate from the drum unit.

6. Slide the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into the machine. Make sure that you match the toner cartridge to the same color label on the machine.

7. Close the top cover of the machine.

8. When you replace a drum unit with a new one, you must manually reset the drum counter. If the drum counter is not reset, the machine will continue to display the message "Replace Drum (K)".
