How do I clear the message "Jam Tray 1"?

Description of Solution 200000024471

The paper trays are designated as shown in the image below.

NOTE:  Tray 2 refers to the LT5300 lower tray unit, which is an optional accessory purchased separately from the machine.

1. Pull Tray 1 completely out of the machine.

2. If paper can be seen at the front of the machine where the paper tray was located, use both hands to firmly grip the paper on each side and then slowly pull the paper down until it is free of the machine.

3. Verify that the media meets the basic required specifications:

- The media weight must be 16 - 43 lb (60 - 163 g/m^2).

- The media length must be 5 - 14 inches (127 - 355.6 mm).

- The media width must be 3 - 8.5 inches (76.2 - 215.9 mm).

The media cannot be damaged.  Damage includes, but is not limited to, tears, creases and holes.  This includes paper with pre-punched holes for binding.

NOTE:  The specifications listed above are the basic requirements for print media compatible with this machine.  For additional recommended media specifications, refer to the solution for "What size and type of paper is recommended for use in my Brother machine?"

- If the media does NOT meet one or more of the requirements, the media is not supported for use with this machine and will need to be replaced by media that is supported before continuing.

4. Remove the paper from the tray and set the paper guides to the correct paper size.

- It will be necessary to hold the release levers (1) when moving the guides to a larger size.

- The release lever for the left and right guides is located at the middle of the right guide.

- The release lever for the rear guide is in the middle of the rear guide.

NOTE:  Make sure that the guides do NOT push tightly against the paper.  They should be set to the positions marked for the paper size that will be loaded into the tray.  If the guides are pushed too tightly against the edges of the paper, the paper may be unable to feed properly.

5. Fan the paper well to avoid paper jams or misfeeds and then load the paper in the tray.

Do not overfill the tray.  The maximum paper level is marked on the right paper guide with a red line with three arrows pointing at it.

6. Put the paper tray firmly back into the machine.  The machine should now resume printing the document that jammed.

a. If the machine does not begin printing, print the Printer Settings by pressing MENU, 3 (Printer), 2 (Print Options), 2 (Configuration), START.

- If the error does not reoccur, discontinue troubleshooting.

- If "Jam Tray 1" appears on the LCD, continue to the next step.

7. Pull Tray 1 completely out of the machine.

8. If paper can be seen at the front of the machine where the paper tray was located, use both hands to firmly grip the paper on each side and then slowly pull the paper down until it is free of the machine.

9. Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

NOTE:  We recommend the placing the toner and drum assembly on a piece of paper in case they accidentally spill or scatter toner.

10. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the green lock lever on the right side of the drum unit and lifting the toner out.

NOTE:  Handle the toner cartridge carefully.  If toner scatters on hands or clothing, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water.

11. Check for torn paper or loose objects inside the drum unit.

12. Reinstall the toner cartridge into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place.  If you put it in properly, the lock lever will lift automatically.

13. Check for torn paper or loose objects inside the machine where the drum/toner assembly was installed.  Remove any if found.

14. Reinstall the toner and drum assembly into the machine and close the front cover.

15. Put the paper tray firmly back into the machine.  The machine should now resume printing the document that jammed.

a. If the machine does not begin printing, print the Printer Settings by pressing MENU, 3 (Printer), 2 (Print Options), 2 (Configuration), START.
