My printed pages are too light. How can I improve the print quality?

Description of Solution 200000025718

NOTE: Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to operate at pre-set thermal and mechanical conditions that are matched specifically to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third-party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

If the pages you print are completely blank refer to the solution - "My printed pages are blank. How can I improve the print quality?"

1 Check the Toner Save setting. If this setting is programmed "On", all printed documents will be light.

a. Press MENU, 1 (General setup), 6 (Ecology), 1 (Toner Save).

b. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key until the display reads "Toner Save: OFF".

c. Press SET.

d. Press STOP/EXIT.

e. If the setting was changed from ON to OFF, print the Help List to test.  Press MENU, 5 (Print Reports), 1 (Help List) and START.

  • If the print quality is still light, continue to STEP 2.

2. Check if the message "Change Drum Soon" is displayed on the LCD of the Brother machine.

- If yes, you will need to install a new DR510 drum.

- If no, continue to STEP 3.

3. Clean the drum unit corona wire and laser glass window by following the instructions listed below:

a. Open the front cover.

b. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out toward you.

NOTE: We recommend placing the toner and drum assembly on a piece of paper in case they accidentally spill or scatter toner.

c. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab located at the top of the drum unit, from left to right several times.

Return the blue tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly. If you don't return the blue tab to the home position, the prints may have a ½ inch wide black vertical stripe.

d. With the drum removed from the machine, clean the laser glass with a DRY cloth. The laser glass is a thin piece of glass located on the roof inside the Brother machine where the drum unit is installed.

CAUTION: Do NOT use isopropyl alcohol or any liquid to clean the glass.

4. Clean the drum contacts.

a. Turn off the power switch located on the right side near the rear of the machine.

b. Look at the right side of the drum near the silver rod sticking out. There will be 3 small metal tabs around the silver rod---1 in the 1:00 position and 2 in the 11:00 position. Clean the 3 metal tabs and silver rod with a dry lint-free cloth.

Put the drum unit aside and continue to STEP c.

c. Inside the machine where the drum normally is positioned, look on the right side and you will see 4 small metal clips (they look like the ends of a paper clip coming thru the frame of the machine). These contact and supply electricity to the small metal tabs on the drum unit. Clean the 4 metal clips with a dry lint-free cloth. You can use a flashlight if it is too dark to see the clips clearly.

d. Reinsert the drum and toner assembly into the Brother machine and close the front cover.

e. Turn the power switch back on.

5. To test, print the Help List by pressing MENU, 5 (Print Reports), 1 (Help List) and START.

6. If the print quality of the Help List is light, check the LCD and see if the message "Toner Low" is displayed.

  • If the message "Toner Low" is displayed, replace the toner cartridge with a new TN540 or TN570 toner.

  • If the message "Toner Low" is not displayed, and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by clicking on the link below:
