Why does the message REPLACE TONER continue to appear on the LCD display after I replaced the toner?

1.    Look at the LCD and read all the lines of the message currently on the display.  Be sure to read the entire scrolling message.  (Ex: Replace Toner. Open the front cover, replace toner cartridge. Black (K))


Confirm the color toner cartridge indicated on the LCD is the same color as the toner cartridge that was replaced.  It is possible that after the replacement toner cartridge was installed, a new message appeared for a different color toner and another color now needs to be replaced.


2.    Verify you installed a NEW, out of the box toner cartridge (TN310 or TN315) from a sealed foil bag.


When replacing a toner cartridge, you should install brand new, out of the box toner cartridge to reset the toner status.  You should NOT install a previously used cartridge that was already installed into another machine or a TN starter toner cartridge that comes with the machine.


Brother toner cartridges are manufactured with a reset lever that moves when installed into the machine.  The movement of the lever mechanically triggers the machine to reset the toner status.  If a used cartridge or a TN starter cartridge is installed into a machine, it will NOT trigger the machine to reset the toner status.


Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.


3.    Verify the drum unit and toner cartridge are installed correctly:


a.    Press down on the front cover release button and open the front cover by pulling it towards you.



b.    Grasp the green handle of the drum unit and pull the drum unit out until it stops.  You can now see the drum and toner assembly.


NOTE: If you cannot pull the drum unit out, make sure the front cover is fully open.



c.    Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and push it slightly toward the machine to unlock it.  Then, pull it out of the drum unit.


NOTE: Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on hands or clothing, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water.



d.    Reinstall the toner cartridge by holding the handle of the toner cartridge and sliding the toner cartridge into the drum unit. Match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the drum unit and fold down the toner cartridge handle once the toner cartridge is in place.



e.    Push the drum unit in until it clicks into place and close the front cover.



Confirm if the REPLACE TONER status continues to appear.


-      If the Replace Toner status no longer appears, the issue is resolved.


-      If the Replace Toner status continues to appear, the machine has a one year limited onsite warranty.


-      If the machine is in warranty, contact Brother Customer Service at 1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, for warranty options.
