How do I clear the message "Document Jam" from the display?

Description of Solution 200000031228

The message "Document Jam" may appear on the display of the Brother machine if documents being faxed or copied are not inserted into or fed through the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) correctly. The message may also occur if the documents are too long.

1. Verify the message displayed on the LCD.  If the date and time is displayed press the STOP/EXIT key and check the display again.

- If the message "Document Jam" is displayed continue to STEP 2.

- If a different message is displayed on the LCD refer to the necessary solution for the message being displayed.

2.  If the original document is jammed in the TOP of the ADF (jammed as it began to feed in) follow the steps below. If the document is stuck INSIDE the ADF go to STEP 3.

a. Remove any paper from the ADF that is not jammed.

b. Open the ADF cover.

c. Pull the jammed document out to the right. Check for and remove any small pieces of paper stuck in the machine.  A small piece of paper stuck in the ADF will cause a document jam.

d. Close the ADF cover securely.

d. Press STOP/EXIT.

e. Continue to STEP 4.

3. If the original document is jammed inside the ADF (jammed after feeding the entire document):

a. Take out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed.

b. Lift the flatbed document cover above the LCD.

c. Pull the jammed original out to the right.

d. Gently close the document cover.

e. Press STOP/EXIT.

f. Continue to STEP 4.

4. Before placing the document(s) back in the ADF, verify that the message "Document Jam" is no longer displayed on the LCD.

-If the error message continues to appear on the display, unplug the machine from the power outlet for approximately 10 seconds and then plug it back in.

-If the error message reappears after cycling the power repeat STEPS 2 and 3 to remove any small pieces of paper from the ADF.

5. Make a copy to test

a. Verify that the ADF Document Support (1) and the ADF Document Output Support Flap (2) are unfolded.

b. Press the COPY button to illuminate it blue.

c. Insert a document into the ADF. The ADF can up up to 50 pages of 20 lb. paper.

-The document should be face up, top edge first in the ADF.

d. The LCD should briefly (3 seconds) display the message "ADF Ready" when the document(s) are set in the ADF and then return to the Copy Options display.

NOTE: The LCD will display the message ADF Ready for only a few seconds before displaying to the Copy Options

-If the LCD does not display the message "ADF Ready", verify the documents are between 5.8 and 11.7 inches wide and 5.8 and 17 inches long.

-If the documents meet the specifications listed above and the LCD does not display the message "ADF Ready" when the document is placed in the ADF, remove the document, open and close the ADF cover securely and then reinsert the documents into the ADF.

-If the LCD still does not change to ADF Ready, continue to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.

e. Adjust the paper guides on the sides of the ADF to fit the width of the document. This ensures the document will feed straight, preventing jams.

-DO NOT use curled, wrinkled, folded, ripped paper or paper with staples, paper clips, paste or tape attached when coping using the ADF.

-DO NOT use cardboard, newspaper or fabric when copying using the ADF.

f. Press the BLACK START or COLOR START key.

-If the documents feed through the ADF correctly the issue is resolved.

-If the message "Document Jam" reoccurs continue to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.
