My Brother machine has no dial tone. What can I do?

Description of Solution 200000032105

If the Brother machine does not have a dial tone, follow these instructions:

- If you are using a standard analog telephone line, go to STEP 1

- If you are using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or MagicJack and your machine does not have a dial tone, make sure that one end of the telephone line connected to the jack on the Brother machine labeled LINE

When using VoIP, the other end of the telephone line may be connected to a modem, interface box, phone adapter, splitter, etc.  This is determined by your VoIP provider.

If one end of the telephone line is connected to the Brother machine's LINE jack, the other end of the telephone line is connected to your VoIP interface, and your machine does not have a dial tone, please contact your VoIP or MagicJack provider for assistance.

1. Press the HOOK key on the Brother machine's control panel and listen for a dial tone.

- If there is no dial tone, verify the telephone line cord is directly connected from the jack labeled LINE on the Brother machine to the wall telephone jack.

- If there are splitters, commshare devices, power strips, or surge protectors between the wall jack and the Brother machine, please remove them.  Removing such devices helps to determine if the missing dial tone is related to the device or the Brother machine.

If the line connection did not require any changes, go to STEP 2

If the line connection required a change, press the HOOK key and listen for a dial tone.

- If there is a dial tone, the issue is resolved.

- If there is still no dial tone, go to STEP 2.

NOTE: To protect your investment against power surges and lightning, Brother strongly recommends you connect your machine to a surge protector.  In particular we suggest you use a surge protector that is compatible with both standard AC power cords and telephone line cords.  Surge protectors equipped with telephone jacks will assist in insulating the machine from any power surge that might travel through a telephone line.

2. Verify the date and time are displayed on the Brother machine's LCD.

a. If the LCD displays the date and time, go to STEP 3.

b. If the LCD displays an error message, refer to the solution that addresses that error message.

c. If the LCD is blank, verify the power cord is plugged in:

i. If the power cord is not connected, plug it directly into a known-working electrical outlet.

- If the LCD displays the date and time, go to STEP 3.

ii. If the power cord is connected to a surge protector or power switch, remove the cord from that device and connect it directly to the outlet.

- Again, removing this device assists in determining if the blank LCD is related to that device or the Brother machine.

iii. If the LCD is still blank, connect the Brother machine to a different, known-working electrical outlet.
