"Why does the message "Change Drum Soon" continue to appear on the LCD after I replaced the drum?

Description of Solution 200000032383

This solution is for "Change Drum Soon" error continuing after the drum unit has previously replaced.

NOTE: Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

Reset the drum counter using the following steps:

1. Open the front cover, and then press the CLEAR/BACK key.

2. Press 1. When the LCD shows "Accepted" close the front cover.

3. Verify that the date and time are displayed on the LCD.

- If the message "Change Drum Soon" clears from the display the issue is resolved.

- If the message "Change Drum Soon" does not clear from the display, continue to STEP 4.

4. Press the cover release button and then open the front cover.

5. Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. Place it on a drop cloth or disposable paper to avoid scattering toner.

6. Hold down the lock lever on the right and pull the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

CAUTION: Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water.

7. Inside the drum unit there is a roller. To remove any excess toner from the roller lightly dampen a cotton swab with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and gently clean the toner or debris from the roller. You may turn this roller by moving the white gear on the far left side.

NOTE: Let the drum surface completely dry before you reset the toner back into the drum.

8. Install the toner into the drum unit until it clicks into place.

9. Gently rock the drum and toner cartridge from side to side five or six times to distribute any remaining toner evenly inside the cartridge.

10. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab from right to left several times. Return the blue tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.

11. Place the drum and toner assembly back into the Brother machine.

12. Close the front cover.

13. Verify that the date and time are displayed on the LCD.

If the message "Change Drum Soon" clears from the display the issue is resolved.

- If the message "Change Drum Soon" does not clear from the display, the drum (DR510) will need to be replaced.

The drum and toner warranty covers manufacturing defects for a period of 90 days from the date of purchase or the rated life of the consumable, whichever occurs first.
