How do I configure the wireless printer and install the printer driver without a cable in Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, or 8?

PART I: Gather the wireless network settings of your wireless access point or router

 

Gather the following wireless network settings of your access point or router .  Refer to the access point or router user guide for instructions on accessing the network settings information.  

 

SSID or Network Name

The name of your wireless network or access point

Network Security Key (Password)

encryption key, WEP key, passphrase

 

IMPORTANT:  Some access points and routers have both a primary and guest network.  Guest networks allow access to the network Internet connection, but restricts direct access to the network.  The Brother machine should be setup on the primary network and not the guest network.

PART II: Reset the Brother machine

 

If you have previously configured or tried to configure the Brother machine on a network, we recommend performing a Settings Reset:

 

1.    Check that the front cover of the machine is closed. Turn OFF the power switch on the right side of the machine.

 

2.    Hold down the GO button as you turn on the power switch. Keep the GO button pressed down until all the LEDs light up and then Ready LED turns off.

 

3.    Release the GO button. Make sure that all the LEDs turn off.

 

4.    Press the GO button 10 times. Make sure that all the LEDs light up to indicate the printer has been reset to its factory default settings. The machine will restart.

 

 

PART III: Wireless Configuration

 

1.    If you have the supplied CD-ROM and your computer is running Windows 2000, XP, Vista, or Windows 7, go to STEP 4.

 

If you do not have the supplied CD-ROM or you are using another operating system, you will need to download the software from the Brother web site. Continue to STEP 2.

 

2.    For instructions on how to navigate the Brother website to download the Full Driver & Software Package, please click here.

 

3.    Choose Usa and click OK.  Go to STEP 6.

 

 

4.    Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, choose your machine. If the language screen appears, choose your language.

 

NOTE:  If the CD does not automatically run, browse to (My) Computer and then double click on the Brother icon to run the CD.

 

5.    Choose Install Printer Driver (U.S.A./Canada/Latin America).

 

 

6.    After reading and accepting the License Agreement, click Yes if you agree to the terms.

 

 

7.    Choose Wireless Network Connection. Click Next.

 

 

8.    Choose Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer. Click Next.

 

 

9.    Choose Change the Firewall port settings to enable network connection and continue with the installation. (Recommended).  Click Next.

 

NOTE: If you are using a firewall other than the Windows Firewall or the Windows Firewall is off, then click OK when you receive the firewall warning screen.

 

 

10. Select No when prompted to use WPS or AOSS. Click Next.

 

 

11. Click Checked and confirmed for the Important Notice. Click Next.

 

 

12. Choose Advanced method (Using Ad-hoc mode to configure the device for infrastructure mode). Click Next.

 

 

13. Enable to wireless netcard on the Brother machine.  Press and hold the GO button on the Brother machine until the Network Configuration page starts to print.  Locate the Node Type near the top of the page.

 

-      If the Node Type is Brother NC-7800w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Active), go to STEP 14.

 

-      If the Node Type is Brother NC-7800w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Inactive) or Brother NC-8200h, Ethernet 10/100BASE-TX (Active), press and hold the GO button on the Brother machine again until the Network Configuration page starts to print.  Now it will list Brother NC-7800w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Active). Continue to STEP 14

 

 

14. You will be changing the wireless network your computer is currently connected to.  Make sure to note your current wireless network settings (SSID/Network Name and Network Security Key/Password) so you can restore these settings after setup.

 

 

15. To communicate with the Brother machine in Ad-hoc mode, the wireless computer needs to join the Brother machine's SETUP network.  Refer to the following solution for instructions if needed - How do I join my computer to the SETUP wireless network? 

 

 

16. Choose the Brother machine and click Next.

 

 

NOTE:

-      If there are no Brother machines listed, click Refresh.

 

-      If the Brother machine is still not detected, wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to join the SETUP network.

 

-      If the Brother machine is still not detected, cancel the installation and select another method of installation (USB cable or Ethernet cable).

 

17. Select your wireless network and click Next

 

 

18. Enter your wireless Network Key and re-enter it for Confirm Network Key. This information was collected in PART I above.  Click Next.

 

 

19. Your wireless network settings will be displayed, click Next.

 

 

20. A WLAN report will print. It may take 2 minutes to print.

 

-      If the report shows Connection: Failed, refer to the error code and Solution printed on the report to explain why the setup failed. Select Connection: Failed and click Next. Click Finish to exit the setup.

 

-      If the report shows Connection: OK, select Connection: OK and click Next.

 

 

21. Switch your computer BACK to your original wireless network, rather than the SETUP network. If you need assistance doing this, refer to the following solution, but you will select your original network instead of the SETUP network this time - How do I join my computer to the SETUP wireless network? 

 

 

 

PART IV: Printer Driver Installation

 

1.    Click Next to continue to install the printer driver.

 

 

2.    Choose your Brother machine from the list, and then click Next.

 

 

NOTE: If the message No devices could be found over the network appears:

 

 

a.    Wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to join the network and receive an IP address.

 

b.    Click OK to search again.

 

c.    If the message still appears, please reset the router by powering it off, then back on.

 

d.    Wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to join the network and receive an IP address.

 

e.    If the message still appears, please refer to The message "No Devices Could Be Found Over the Network" appears when installing the Brother machine on the network. What can I do?  

 

3.    The installation of the printer driver will automatically continue.  The installation screens appear one after the other.  Do not cancel any of the screens during the installation.  It may take a few moments for all screens to appear.

 

4.    The option to view the user's guide online is displayed. Click Next.

 

 

5.    When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, you can click Brother Registration and follow the on-screen instructions.  Once you have completed the registration or if you have already registered your Brother machine, click Next.

 

 

6.    When the first Setup is Complete window appears, you may enable (check) or disable (uncheck) any of the following settings as desired and then click Finish:

 

-      Enable Status Monitor on Startup: A software tool for monitoring device status and error notifications from your PC.

 

-      Enable the Network Connection Repair Tool: Software that checks for network problems and automatically attempts to correct them.

 

-      Set as Default Printer: Set this printer as the default printer for the current user.

 

 

7.    When the Software Update Setting screen appears, choose the software update setting you want and click OK.
