My carriage is stuck and the machine is making a continuous grinding noise. How can I correct this?

Description of Solution 200000033513

If the carriage does not move or makes a grinding noise when moving, unplug the machine.

1.Open the cover and examine the interior of the machine, remove any objects that may have fallen into the machine.

a.    Check the correction tape to insure that it has not come loose and dropped from the carriage.

2.Is the carriage all the way on the left side of the typewriter?

a.    Is the ribbon raised?

b.    If the ribbon is raised, plug in the machine and turn it on.

c.    The ribbon should cycle down and then the carriage should move to the right.

d.    If the ribbon remains in the raised position, the typewriter will require service. See the statements below regarding warranty and locating an Authorized Service Center.

3.Try to push the carriage towards either side.

a.    If the carriage moves, push it all the way to the right side frame.

b.    Below the carriage is a white rail with teeth, this is the track on which the carriage is driven.  Examine this rail for any damage.

c.    If the carriage moves with no resistance it will require service.

4.Plug in the typewriter and turn it on.

5.If the typewriter still will not move the carriage, it will require service.
