My EM630 typewriter will not initialize a new disk. What can I do?

Description of Solution 200000033514

The EM630 typewriter is designed to recognize and initialize 2DD (double density) floppy disks, either formatted for a computer or with no formatting.  We have found from testing that the EM630 typewriter will recognize 2HD (High density) floppy disks if they have been formatted for use with a computer.

NOTE: Although we recognize that the EM630 will generally accept 2HD floppy disks, we recommend that you only use 2DD floppy disks with this unit.

1.    If your typewriter does not initialize the blank disk that you inserted, check for any physical damage to the disk.

2.    If a computer with a 3.5” floppy drive is available, insert the disk into the floppy disk drive on the computer.

a.    If the disk is not formatted, you can format it according to the procedures for your computers’ operating system.

b.    If your computer does not recognize the floppy disk, the disk is most likely bad and should be replaced.

c.    Try a different floppy disk in computer.  If it is recognized, format the disk and then test it in the typewriter.

If the typewriter still does not recognize the floppy disk, the typewriter may require service.
