How do I clear the message "Cannot Detect" from the display?

Description of Solution 200000033574

-         If you are setting up the Brother machine for the first time and the message "Cannot Detect" is displayed on the LCD refer to solution: "I'm setting up my Brother machine for the first time and the message 'Cannot Detect' is displayed on the LCD. What can I do?"

-         If you are not setting the machine up for the first time the message "Cannot Detect" is displayed on the LCD, refer to the instructions and information listed below.

NOTE:

- Inserting the ink cartridges first before powering the machine on will cause the error message to occur.  The machine has to be powered on first before the ink cartridges are installed.

- Inserting the ink cartridges too quickly into the machine can cause this error to occur.  The ink cartridges need to be installed slowly.

- Holding the ink cartridge upside down when you remove its orange protective cap could create air pockets in the cartridge.  Hold the ink cartridge with the orange protective cap to the side when removing the orange cap from the cartridge.

- Make sure to twist the green lever on the orange protective cap before removing the cap from the cartridge.  Removing the orange protective cap without twisting the green lever to pressurize the cartridge could also create air pockets in the cartridge.

1. Verify the complete message displayed on the LCD.

- If the message "Cannot Detect" is displayed continue to STEP 2.

- If another message is displayed, refer to the solution for the displayed message.

2. The message "Cannot Detect" can appear if an ink cartridge(s) has reached the end of its life.

a.   Determine which color(s) are affected by reading the colored initials on the bottom left corner of the LCD screen. In the image below Y and M are displayed. Y= Yellow, M = Magenta.

b.   Open the ink cartridge cover located at the right front corner of the machine.

c.    Press down on the colored release lever(s) to release the affected ink cartridge(s) and remove from the machine.

d.   Examine each ink cartridge removed and identify the location of the Ink Sensor in the Ink Sensor Window.

LC71 Cartridge and the LC75 (Shown in the image) series cartridges are similar but slightly larger.

3. Is the ink sensor at the top of the window?

          - If no, continue to STEP 4.

          - If yes, the cartridge has reached the end of its life and needs to be replaced.

NOTE:  If you are not sure as to where the sensor should be, remove one of the ink cartridges that is not listed with the message "Cannot Detect", and compare it to the cartridge being evaluated.

          - If it is verified that the cartridge has reached the end of its life, a new genuine Brother ink cartridge will need to be installed into the machine.

NOTE:  "There will be a small amount of ink left in the ink cartridge. It is necessary to keep some ink in the ink cartridge to prevent air from drying out and damaging the print head assembly."

4.  Insert each cartridge SLOWLY in the direction of the arrow on its label until it clicks into place and the lever will be in upright position. Each ink color has its own designated position, which is indicated by the color of the corresponding lever.

5. Close the ink cartridge cover.

-      If the error message is cleared, then the issue is resolved.

-      If the message "Cannot Detect" continues to appear on the LCD, go to STEP 6.

6. Open the ink cartridge cover located at the right front corner of the machine.

7. Press down on the colored release levers and release and remove all 4 ink cartridges from the machine.

8. Close the ink cartridge cover. Do not reinstall the ink cartridge(s).

9. Unplug the machine from the power outlet for 5 seconds and then plug it back in.

10. When the machine completes powering up the message "No Ink Cartridge Install Ink" will be displayed on the LCD. Open the ink cartridge cover located at the right front corner of the machine.

11.  Insert each cartridge SLOWLY in the direction of the arrow on its label until it clicks into place and the lever will be in upright position. Each ink color has its own designated position, which is indicated by the color of the corresponding lever.

12. Close the ink cartridge cover.

13. Read the complete message displayed on the LCD.

          - If the message is cleared and LCD returns to the standby mode the issue is resolved.

-  If the message "Cannot Detect" continues to appear on the LCD, and you have verified that you are using a new genuine Brother ink cartridge, then continue to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.

          - If another error message is displayed refer to the necessary solution for the message that is appearing on the LCD.
