I have image quality issues when scanning from my Brother machine. What can I do?

Scan quality can be affected by several factors.  The following suggestions may improve scan quality:

 

1. Check the copy quality first. If the copy quality is not acceptable you should resolve this issue with the hardware before attempting to resolve any software issue.

2. Clean the following four areas with a lint-free cloth moistened with isopropyl alcohol.

 

 

A. The large scanner glass of the flat bed.

 

B. The large white plastic film located on the underside of the document cover.

 

C. The thin glass strip located to the left of the flat bed scanner glass.

 

D. The white plastic pressure bar located to the left of the white film.

 

3. Test the machine by copying a document. To make a copy, place the document face up in the ADF. Press START.

 

- If the copy comes out normally, discontinue troubleshooting.

 

- If the copy has poor copy quality, continue to STEP 4.

 

4. Cycle the power to the brother machine 30-45 seconds. The scanner should recalibrate when power is restored.

 

- If the copy is acceptable and scan quality is unacceptable, it could indicate a limitation with the scanning software.

 

- Some programs will display an image in a reduced size or resized image on the display and have options to view actual size or zoom in/out.  Make sure you are actually viewing the actual size of the scan.

 

- Try scanning in another program if available.

 

- Increase the resolution and try saving as a different file format.  Higher resolutions will increase the file size but should yield better results in quality. Some scanning quality issues could be caused by compression of the file by using file formats such as JPEG.  Try saving the image as a bitmap (BMP) or in a lossless format such as PNG or TIFF.

 

- Your computer's video card and monitor could have an effect on the appearance of the scan. Verify the settings for the video card and the monitor have the ability to reproduce the scan properly. If the driver settings are set to lower resolutions than used for scanning, then image quality will be affected.  Contact your PC vendor for support.
