The printed pages are all black. How can I improve the print quality?

1. Print the User Settings:

 

a. Press MENU, 4 (Print Reports), 4 (User Settings).

 

b. Press START.  A User Settings report will print. Once the User Settings prints, press STOP/EXIT to exit the menu. 

 

- If the User Settings page prints out okay, discontinue troubleshooting.

 

- If the User Settings page is all black, continue to STEP 2.  

 

- If any text or image can be viewed and another issue appears, e.g. gray background, horizontal or vertical lines, refer to the appropriate solution for the issue.

 

2. Unplug the power cord from the machine.

 

3. Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

 

 

NOTE: We recommend you place the toner and drum assembly on a piece of paper in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water. 

 

4. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab located the top of the drum unit, from left to right several times. Return the green tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.

 

 

NOTE:  This step applies to genuine Brother drums only.  You may not have the ability to clean the corona wire on a non-genuine Brother drum.

 

5. While facing the drum and toner cartridge, on the right side of the drum you should see two small pieces of metal that look like staples aligned vertically and a metal rod protruding from the side.  Clean off these pieces with a soft lint-free dry cloth.

 

 

6. Gently rock the drum and toner cartridge from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge. 

 

 

 

7. Reinstall the drum unit into the Brother machine and close the front cover, pressing firmly on each side until the cover clicks into place.

 

 

 

 

8. Reconnect the power cord to the machine. 

 

9. Print the User Settings:

 

a. Press MENU, 4 (Print Reports), 4 (User Settings).

 

b. Press START.  A User Settings report will print. Once the User Settings prints, press STOP/EXIT to exit the menu. 

 

- If the User Settings page prints out okay, discontinue troubleshooting.

 

- If the User Settings page is all black, continue to Warranty and Service Options.

 

- If any text or image can be viewed and another issue appears, e.g. gray background, horizontal or vertical lines, refer to the appropriate solution for the issue.
