Description of Problem 100000027512

I recently installed the starter or a new toner cartridge and I don't think I got the full yield from the toner. What can I do?

Description of Solution 200000035328

If you feel you aren't getting the proper amount of toner out of your cartridge consider the following:

1. Are you using a genuine Brother toner cartridge?

If you are using a refill or non-Brother genuine toner cartridge, install a genuine Brother toner cartridge.  Since Brother is not the manufacturer of the toner cartridge you are using, we cannot guarantee or troubleshoot the performance of the toner.  Using non-Brother toners or drum units may cause hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability issues. Genuine Brother drum units and toners are designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Brother strongly recommends that our customers use only genuine Brother drums and toners for best results.

2.  Is the toner cartridge the starter that came with the machine or is it a replacement cartridge?

If the toner is the starter cartridge that came with the machine, the starter cartridge has a lower amount of toner compared to the standard and high yield replacement cartridges and does not yield as a high a page count.  (See below for toner yields.)

3. What types of documents do you typically print on your machine?  For example:

-  memos

-  documents

-  spreadsheets and reports

-  graphics

Our toners are produced with a specific amount of toner to yield the following:

TN620 toner cartridge has a yield of approximately 3,000 pages*
TN650 toner cartridge has a yield of approximately 8,000 pages*

*The approximate toner yield is in accordance with ISO/IEC 19752.

The number of pages that can be printed with a toner cartridge is affected by several factors, including paper size, number of pages per print job, amount of print on each page, font size, and print content, such as graphics, charts, etc.  A typical printed document is one letter-sized (8.5" x 11") page with 4% - 5% print coverage.

4. Shake the toner cartridge and clean the corona wire.

a. Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

NOTE: We recommend you place the toner and drum assembly on a piece of paper in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

b. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the blue lock lever on the right side of the drum unit and lifting the toner out.

NOTE: Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on hands or clothing, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water.

c. Gently rock the toner cartridge from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.  If the message "Toner Low" or "Replace Toner" is on the display, redistributing the toner may clear the message when the drum and toner assembly is reinstalled into the machine.

d.  Place the toner cartridge back into the drum (be sure it clicks into place).

e.  Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab on the top of the cartridge from left to right several times. Return the blue tab to the home position (1) before reinstalling the drum and toner assembly.

f.  Reinstall the drum and toner assembly into the machine.

g.  Close the front cover.
