The Drum and Error LEDs are flashing on and off. The Status Monitor states "Drum Error". What can I do?

If the Drum LED (yellow) and Error LED (amber/orange) are flashing on and off or if the Status Monitor displays the message "Drum Error", the corona wire of the drum unit has become dirty.


Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.


The drum unit part number is DR720 and is a consumable item that requires periodic replacement.


There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as temperature, humidity, type of paper and how much toner you use for the number of pages per print job. The estimated drum life is up to 30,000 pages in accordance with ISO/IEC 19752. The actual number of pages your drum will print may be significantly less than these estimates.  Because we have no control over the many factors that determine the actual drum life, we cannot guarantee a minimum number of pages that will be printed by your drum.



1. Press the cover release button and then open the front cover.



2. Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.


NOTE: We recommend that you place the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of paper in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.



CAUTION: After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool down before you touch the internal parts of the machine.


3. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right to left several times. Be sure to return the green tab to the home position (1) at the far left making sure it snaps into place before you put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the machine.


NOTE: If the green tab is not returned to the home position, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.





5. Reinstall the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into the machine.



6. Close the front cover.


- If the error message clears, the issue is resolved.


- If the error was not cleared, the drum has reached the end of its life. Replace the drum with a new out of box Brother DR720.


- If the drum was already replaced and the error did not clear, continue to the next step.


- If the error continues and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by clicking on the link below: or you can contact Brother Customer Service by calling 1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. 


If your machine is out of warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center using the information listed above.
