The printed pages have a gray background.  How do I improve the print quality?

1.     Print the "Printer Settings" page by pressing the OK key three times.

2.     Examine the page: 

a.    If the entire page has grey shading (all areas that should be white are actually grey, including the background), go to STEP 3.  

b.    If the background is normal, but there are portions of the document that are the wrong color (areas are grey when they should be another color), refer to solution "The colors of the printed document or image are not what I expected. It does not match the computer screen. What can I do?" 

3.     Open the top cover (1) to access the toner cartridge area.   

 

NOTE: Always be sure to completely open the top cover of the machine before attempting to remove or install any consumables.  The top cover is completely open when you feel it "snap" in place and does not require support from the user in order to keep it open. Failure to completely open the cover when removing or installing the drum unit may cause it to become stuck or damage the machine.

 

4.     Do the following: 

a.       Remove the Black drum and toner cartridge assembly from the machine (see image below).


 

 

Note: Place the drum and toner cartridge assembly on a clean, flat surface with a piece of disposable paper underneath in case toner accidentally spills or scatters.

 

b.      Next, remove the Cyan OR the Magenta drum and toner cartridge from the machine. Do not remove both.

c.       Place the Black drum and toner cartridge in the machine in the position where the Cyan or Magenta assembly was removed.

d.      Place the Cyan or Magenta drum and toner cartridge in the machine in the position where the Black assembly was removed.  

NOTE: Do not separate the toners from the drums. Swap the toners and drums as a set.  

5.     Close the top cover. What for the machine to reach the "Ready" state.  

6.     Print the "Printer Settings" page by pressing the OK key three times.

- The original black text will now be printed in color since the drums/toners have been switched in the machine.

7.     Examine the new document printed with the drums and toners switched in the machine:
 

a.    If the background color has changed and matches the color of the drum and toner currently in the Black position of the machine (Cyan or Magenta) go to STEP 11.

 

b.    If the background color is normal, go to STEP 8.

 

8.     The Black toner may be responsible for the issue. Even if the machine is not displaying a "Toner Low" message, it may still be causing the issue. Replacement of the Black toner with a Genuine Brother toner may resolve the issue.

 

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

 

If you have a new genuine Brother black toner cartridge available to install continue to STEP 9.

 

9.    Return the consumables to their original positions:   

a.    Place the black drum/toner in the black position, color drum/toner in the color position.

b.    Close the top cover of the Brother machine.

10.  Print the "Printer Settings" page by pressing the OK key three times.

-         If the background of the page no longer has the grey tint, the issue should be considered resolved.

 

-         If the issue is still present after replacing the black toner, continue to STEP 11.

 

11.  If your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by clicking on the link below:
