The printed pages are faint, light, or faded. How do I improve print quality?

1.    Verify the paper is plain, multi-purpose or recycled paper and the paper weight is 16 - 24 lb. 

 

-      If the paper meets these specifications, go to STEP 2.

 

-      If the issue only occurs when printing on thick or special media, refer to the solution "How do I print envelopes, labels, or thick paper from the multi-purpose tray (MP tray)?"

 

 

2.    Press the OK button three times to print the Printer Settings report.  Examine the print quality on each of the printed pages.

 

-      If the print quality is fine on the Printer Settings pages, the reported issue can be resolved by adjusting the Print Density and Toner Save options in the printer driver.  Refer to the appropriate solution for the customer's computer operating system:

 

"How do I adjust the default preferences of my printer driver in Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, Server 2003, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2, and Server 2012?"

 

"How do I adjust the default preferences of my printer driver in Macintosh OS X 10.5.8, 10.6, 10.7, or 10.8?"

 

-      If the print quality is bad on the Printer Settings pages, go to STEP 3.

 

 

3.    Closely examine the printed text and horizontal lines on each of the pages of the Printer Settings report.  Does any of the print appear to have a shadow or to be smeared downwards? See example below.

 

 

-      If print is smeared, shadowed, blurry or fuzzy and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by clicking on the link below:

If your machine is out of warranty, Brother may extend the warranty for this issue.  You can contact Brother Customer Service using the information listed above.

 

-      If the print is faint but not blurry at all, go to STEP 4.

 

 

4.    Make sure that Toner Save mode is not on:

 

a.    Press the DOWN ARROW button until "General Setup" appears on the LCD and then press OK.

 

b.    Press the DOWN ARROW button until "Ecology" appears on the LCD and then press OK.

 

c.    Press the DOWN ARROW button until "Toner Save" appears on the LCD and then press OK.

 

-      If the Toner Save mode is set to On, press the DOWN ARROW button until "Off" appears on the LCD and then press OK.  Go to STEP 5.

 

-      If the Toner Save mode is already set to Off, go to STEP 6.

 

 

5.    Press the CANCEL button to exit the current menu and then press the OK button three times to print the Printer Settings.

                                                                                       

-      If the print quality is good, the issue is resolved.

 

-      If the print quality is still faint, go to STEP 6.

 

 

 

6.    Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

 

 

NOTE: We recommend the customer place the toner and drum assembly on a piece of paper in case they accidentally spill or scatter toner.

 

 

7.    Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab located the top of the drum unit, from left to right several times. Return the green tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.

8.    While facing the drum and toner cartridge, on the right side of the drum you should see two small pieces of metal that look like staples aligned vertically and a metal rod protruding from the side.  Clean off these pieces with a soft lint-free dry cloth.

9.    Gently rock the toner from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

10. Reinstall the toner into the drum (be sure it clicks into place).  If you put it in properly, the green lock lever will lift automatically.

11. Reinstall the drum and toner assembly into the machine and close the front cover.

12. Press the OK button three times to print the Printer Settings.

 

-      If the print quality is good, the issue is resolved.

 

-      If the print quality is still faint, and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by clicking on the link below:
