Description of Problem 100000028807

The machine makes a grinding or clicking noise when warming up or printing. What can I do?

Description of Solution 200000036946

1.  Make a copy to help determine the origin of the noise:

a. Verify the ADF document support (located on the top of the ADF) is pulled out.

b. Verify the document(s) are between 5.8 to 8.5 in. wide and 5.8 to 14 in. long.

c. Make sure the document(s) are inserted face up in the ADF, top edge first. The ADF can hold up to 50 pages and feeds each sheet individually. Use standard 20 lb (80 g/m2) paper and always fan the pages before putting them in the ADF.

- DO NOT use paper that is curled, wrinkled, folded, ripped, stapled, paper-clipped, pasted or taped.

- DO NOT use cardboard, newspaper or fabric.

- Make sure documents written with ink are completely dry.

d. Adjust the paper guides to fit the width of your documents (1 in the image above). This ensures the document(s) will feed straight, preventing jams.

e. To make a copy, press the START key.

- If no grinding or clicking noise can be heard while the page feeds through the ADF, continue to STEP 2.

- If grinding or clicking noise can be heard while the page feeds through the ADF, go to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.

2. Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.

3.  Turn off the machine's power switch (located on the right side of the machine).

4. Open the front cover.

5. Remove the drum and toner assembly from the machine by pulling on the handle in the middle of the drum and toner assembly.

NOTE: We recommend that you place the drum and toner assembly on a piece of paper in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

6. Close the front cover and power the machine back on. Wait for the machine to initialize.

- If the grinding or clicking noise still occurs, go to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.

- If the grinding or clicking noise does not occur when the drum and toner assembly are removed from the machine, continue to the next step.

7. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit by holding down the green lock lever on the right side and then lift the toner cartridge off of the drum unit.

NOTE: Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.

8. Power off the machine and open the front cover.

9. Install the drum unit into the machine without the toner cartridge in it.

10. Close the front cover.

11. Power the machine back on. Wait for the machine to initialize.

- If the grinding or clicking noise occurs, the drum unit is the cause of the noise.  You will need to replace the drum unit (DR720) to resolve this issue.

- If the grinding or clicking noise does not occur when the drum unit is installed into the machine, continue to the next step.

12. Power off the machine and open the front cover.

13. Remove the drum unit.

14. Reinstall the toner cartridge into the drum unit. The toner cartridge will lock into place when set correctly.

15. Install the drum and toner assembly into the machine and close the front cover.

16. Power the machine back on.

- If the grinding or clicking noise occurs, the toner cartridge is the cause. You will need to replace the toner cartridge (TN720 or TN750) to resolve this issue.
