Description of Problem 100000029091

My Brother machine has no power and/or shutting down and rebooting. What should I do?

Description of Solution 200000037367

-         If your machine is cycling power (shutting down and/or rebooting), go to STEP 7.

-         If your machine appears to be off, please continue to STEP 1.

1.  Verify the machine is not in Sleep Mode.  When the Brother machine is idle for a certain period of time, it enters Sleep Mode.  In Sleep Mode, the machine acts as though it is turned off and the LCD will be blank.  If you press the touchscreen LCD on the control panel, the machine receives a fax or computer data, or you make a copy, it will wake up.

-         To determine if your Brother machine is in Sleep Mode, press the touchscreen LCD.

-         If your Brother machine's LCD lights up and displays the date and time, the issue is resolved.  For more information about Sleep Mode, refer to the solution: "Can I adjust my Brother machine's Sleep Mode setting?"

-         If the LCD remains blank, go to STEP 2.

2. Verify the power cord is firmly connected to the AC power outlet.

-         If the power cord is connected to a surge protector or power switch, remove the cord from that device and connect it directly to the outlet. This is for testing purposes. Removing such devices assists in determining if the power issue is related to the device or the Brother machine.

-         If the machine powers on when connected directly to the outlet, investigate your surge protector or power switch. It may require replacement. The issue is resolved.

-         If the LCD of the machine remains blank, continue to STEP 3.

NOTE: To protect your investment against power surges and lightning, Brother strongly recommends that you connect your machine to a surge protector.  In particular, we suggest that you use a surge protector that is compatible with both standard A.C. power cords and telephone line cords.  Surge protectors equipped with telephone jacks will assist in insulating your machine from any power surge that might travel through a telephone line.

3. Verify your Brother machine is powered on.

-         Press the ON/OFF key for approximately 2 seconds.  The ON/OFF key is located on the Brother machine's control panel on the right end of the control panel.  When the Brother machine is off, its display will be blank.

-         If the machine powers on after pressing the ON/OFF key, the issue is resolved.

-         If the Brother machine's LCD is still blank, continue to STEP 4.

4. If the machine still appears to have no power, do one of the following:

-         Connect the Brother machine to another, known-working outlet.

-         Verify the electrical outlet is working by plugging a known-working device, such as a lamp or radio, directly into the same outlet.  If that device does not work, the problem is related to the outlet or circuit.

5. You may also need to check for a tripped circuit breaker.  If a wall switch controls the outlet, verify the switch is ON.

6. If the problem continues after following this solution, go to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.

7. If the power issue is intermittent or the machine is rebooting, follow these steps to isolate the issue:

  1. Connect the Brother machine to another, known-working outlet.

  2. Verify the electrical outlet is working by plugging a known-working device, such as a lamp or radio, directly into the same outlet.  If that device does not work, the problem is related to the outlet or circuit.

-         If the Brother machine is connected to a known-working outlet, and continues to have intermittent power issues, go to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.
