The printed pages have black horizontal lines or streaks. How can I improve the print quality?

1. Print the Printer Settings Page by pressing MENU, 3 (Printer), 2 (Print Options), 2 (Configuration). Press START.

 

2. Verify the Main firmware version on the Printer Settings report.

 

NOTE: The firmware version is listed below the Machine Model Number and Serial Number.  It will be listed as Main Controller Main ROM Version.

 

 

-  If the firmware version is D or higher, this firmware version is fine and black horizontal lines appear on the Printer Settings page, go to STEP 3.

 

-  If the firmware version is C or lower, the firmware will need to be updated to the latest version before continuing to the next step.

 

-  A firmware update tool is available that will allow you to update the Brother machine with the most recent version firmware by downloading updates over the Internet.

 

-  Go to solution: How do I perform a firmware update or firmware upgrade on my Brother machine? 

 

-  Once the firmware update is completed in the next step, return to this solution and go STEP 3.

 

3. Print the Printer Settings Page by pressing MENU, 3 (Printer), 2 (Print Options), 2 (Configuration). Press START.

 

- If no black horizontal lines appear, the issue is resolved. 

 

- If black horizontal lines continue to appear on the Printer Settings page after the firmware update, continue to the next step.

 

4. This issue is usually resolved by cleaning and/or replacing the drum. Manually clean the drum surface by following the instructions listed below:

 

a. Open the front cover.

 

 

 

b. Take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly by pulling on the handle in the middle of the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.

 

 

 

NOTE: We recommend that you place the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of paper in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

 

c. Push down the green lock lever on the right side of the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly and then lift the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. 

 

 

NOTE: Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.

 

d. Inside the drum unit is a roller. Clean the roller by gently wiping the entire surface with a lint free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol (91% strength alcohol is preferred, but 70 - 75% strength alcohol is also acceptable).  You can also use an alcohol swab, such as a medical alcohol pad or wipe, which can be found in a first aid kit.  Use the white gear on the far left side to turn the roller and ensure you clean the entire surface. 

 

As a precaution please note: Isopropyl alcohol is flammable and should be kept away from fire or flame. 

 

 

 

e. Before continuing further, allow the alcohol to evaporate or dry off the drum surface.

 

f. Once the drum surface is dry, clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab located at the top of the drum unit from left to right and back several times. Be sure to return the green tab to the home position (1).

 

 

 

g. Reinstall the toner into the drum (be sure it clicks into place). If you put it in properly, the green lock lever will lift automatically. 

 

 

 

 

h. Reinstall the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into the machine, close the front cover, pressing firmly on each side until the cover clicks into place.

 

 

5. Make 10 to 15 blank copies from the ADF to further clean any remaining debris left on the drum surface.

 

 

6. Print the Printer Settings Page by pressing MENU, 3 (Printer), 2 (Print Options), 2 (Configuration). Press START.

 

- If no black horizontal lines appear, the issue is resolved.

 

- If black horizontal lines still appear on the Printer Settings page(s), a second manual drum cleaning may be needed.  Repeat STEPS 4 - 6

 

- If there are still black horizontal lines after doing two (2) manual drum cleanings, continue to the next step.

 

7.  Remove the paper tray from the machine.

 

 

8.  Remove any paper from the tray and turn the tray over so the bottom is facing up.

 

9.  Near the handle side of the tray, in the middle, should be a wire sticking out of the plastic.  Gently clean the spring with a dry soft cloth.

 

 

10. Once cleaned, turn the tray over and place the paper back into the paper tray.  Place the paper tray fully into the machine.

 

11. Print the Printer Settings Page by pressing MENU, 3 (Printer), 2 (Print Options), 2 (Configuration). Press START.

 

- If no black horizontal lines appear, the issue is resolved.
