After replacing the drum, the Drum light is on solid or the Status Monitor states Replace Drum. What should I do?

Description of Solution 200000039320

The machine uses a drum unit to create print images on paper. If the Drum LED (yellow) is lit solid or the status monitor displays the message "Replace Drum" the drum unit is at the end of its life and should be replaced with a new drum unit (DR-420).

The drum unit is a consumable item, and it is necessary to replace it periodically. There are many factors that affect the actual life of the drum, such as temperature, humidity, type of paper, and how much toner you use for the number of pages per print job.  The estimated drum life is approximately 12,000 pages A4 or Letter size single-sided pages at 1 page per job. Because of the many factors affecting the actual drum life, we cannot guarantee a minimum number of pages to print from your drum.

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.

-  If you have a new DR420 ready to install into the machine, refer to the solution: "How do I install a new drum unit?"

- If you installed a replacement drum and the Drum LED (yellow) NEVER went out or the status monitor NEVER stopped displaying the message REPLACE DRUM, do the following to verify the drum counter was reset:

1. Open the front cover.

2. Take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly and reinstall it into the machine.  DO NOT close the front cover.

3. Press and hold down the GO button for about 4 seconds until all of the LEDs light up.  Once all four LEDs are lit, release the GO button.

4. Close the front cover.

5. Confirm the drum LED is now off.

- If the Drum LED is still lit or the message continues to appear, repeat STEPS 1-5 to confirm the drum counter was reset properly.
