Description of Problem 100000030988

The colors of the printed document or image do not match the Windows or Macintosh computer screen, or they are too dark, or printing with too much red. What can I do?

Description of Solution 200000039836

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.

Computer monitors display color as RGB (red, green, and blue). A monitor can display millions of colors. The color laser machine uses a 4 color printing process of CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). The Brother machine uses these 4 colors to create as many colors as possible.

What we see on a computer monitor is emitted light. What we see on a printed document is reflected light. Due to this difference, we cannot get a 100% accurate match. The nature of both types of light and how our eyes react makes color matching between them a bit of a challenge. Even LCD monitors are different from CRT monitors, as the brightness and contrast differ greatly.

The paper brightness and smoothness will affect the colors you see printed on the page. The colors you see on the page may look different in natural light, soft white light, and fluorescent light.

The steps below will help you get the best color quality out of your Brother machine.

1.    Verify toner save mode is turned off. When you set the toner save feature to on, print appears lighter.

  1. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select General Setup. Press the OK key.

  1. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Ecology. Press the OK key.

  1. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Toner Save. Press the OK key.

  1. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Off. Press the OK key.

  1. Press the CANCEL key to exit the menu.

2.    Once the display returns to "Ready", print a document from your computer.

-      If the print quality of the document that you printed from the computer is good, the issue is resolved.

-      If the colors are still not printing correctly, continue to the next step.

3.    The output density for each color may vary depending on the machine's environment, temperature, and humidity. Calibration and registration helps improve the color density and quality.

  1. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Color Correction. Press the OK key.

  1. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Color Calibration. Press the OK key.

  1. Press the OK key to select Calibrate.

  1. Press the UP ARROW key to select Yes.

  1. When the message "Please Wait" is no longer displayed, press the BACK key 2 times to return to the Color Correction menu.

  1. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Auto Regist. Press the OK key.

  1. Press the OK key to select Registration.

  1. Press the UP ARROW key to select Yes.

  1. When the message "Please Wait" is no longer displayed, press the CANCEL key to exit the menu. The machine is now calibrated internally to factory defaults and will print at its best color combination.

4.    Once the display returns to "Ready", print a document from your computer.

-      If the print quality of the document that you printed from the computer is good, the issue is resolved.

-      If the colors are still not printing correctly, continue to the next step.

5.    Verify the toner cartridges are installed in correct slots.

  1. Lift open the top cover using the indented handle in the center until you hear a click.

NOTE: Failure to completely open the top cover when removing and installing consumables may cause severe damage to the machine. The top cover is completely open when the cover locks in place and does not require support from you.

  1. Verify that the toner cartridge color matches the same color label on the machine. The first slot should contain Yellow (Y), the second slot should be contain Magenta (M), the third slot should contain Cyan (C), and fourth slot should contain Black (K).

-      If the drum and toner cartridge assemblies are not in correct slot, then remove the toner and drum cartridge assembly by grasping the center of the drum and toner assembly and pulling it straight up and install it in the correct slot.

  1. When the drum and toner cartridge assemblies are in the correct slots, close the top cover.

6.    Once the display returns to "Ready", print a document from your computer.

-      If the print quality of the document that you printed from the computer is good, the issue is resolved.

-      If the colors are still not printing correctly, continue to the next step.

7.    Run color calibration in the printer driver. Follow the instructions for your operating system.

8.    Print a document from your computer.

-      If the print quality of the document that you printed from the computer is good, the issue is resolved.

-      If the colors are still not printing correctly, continue to the next step.

9.    Check the settings within the application you are using. It may have options to adjust the color. Certain programs have their own settings that could potentially override the machine settings, which will affect color matching. If the problem persists contact your program or software vendor for assistance.

10. Try making adjustments to the printer driver. The printer driver provides a host of adjustments that can be made to resolution, hue, color, saturation, etc. This is usually accessed from the File => Print option when you are about to print a document. The printer driver usually has a properties, preferences, or setup button that provides access to these adjustments. The exact location varies with the application being used. You may need to consult your application documentation for details.

11. Try changing the color profile settings of the printer driver. The color profile is used by the operating system and the machine to create the best possible match between the image on the computer screen and the image that is printed. Again, the location varies with the operating system that is used. You may need to consult the operating system documentation for details.

12. Postscript drivers often do a better job at reproducing graphics and images. It does so, however, at the expense of speed. Postscript drivers take a significantly longer time to process images. You can install the BR-Script3 driver from the Brother CD-ROM or download from the Brother web site http://solutions.brother.com.

13. Try changing the Color Mode in the printer driver. Follow the instructions for your operating system.

  1. Click on Print to print your document. You may need to try printing your document with various settings to achieve the desired output.

-      If the problem continues, continue to the next step.

14. While these adjustments may make a significant difference in color matching the effect will be general and will change the output of everything being printed. Please keep in mind that an exact match may not be possible.

You should experiment with different combinations of the above features to choose the right solution.
