5.  Verify the toner cartridges are installed in correct slots.

a.  Fully open the top cover by lifting up on the handle.

NOTE: Failure to completely open the top cover when removing and installing consumables may cause severe damage to the machine. The top cover is completely open when the cover locks in place and does not require support from the user.

b. Verify the toner cartridge color matches the same color label on the left side of the drum unit. The first slot should contain Yellow (Y), the second slot should contain Magenta (M), the third slot should contain Cyan (C), and the fourth slot should contain Black (K).

c. If any of the toner cartridges are not in the correct slot, remove the toner cartridge by grasping the handle and pulling it straight up and re-install it in the correct slot.

8. Print a document from your computer.

- If the print quality of the document that you printed from the computer is good, the issue is resolved.

- If the colors are still not printing correctly, continue to the next step.

9. Check the settings within the application you are using. It may have options to adjust the color. Certain programs have their own settings that could potentially override the machine settings, which will affect color matching. If the problem persists contact your program or software vendor for assistance.

10. Make adjustments to the printer driver. The printer driver provides a host of adjustments that can be made to resolution, hue, color, saturation, etc. This is usually accessed from the File => Print option when you are about to print a document. The printer driver usually has a properties, preferences, or setup button that provides access to these adjustments. The exact location varies with the application being used. You may need to consult your application documentation for details.

11. Change the color profile settings of the printer driver. The color profile is used by the operating system and the machine to create the best possible match between the image on the computer screen and the image that is printed. Again, the location varies with the operating system that is used. You may need to consult the operating system documentation for details.

12. For model HL3140CW, continue to the next step.

 - For model HL3170CDW, postscript drivers often do a better job at reproducing graphics and images. It does so, however, at the expense of speed. Postscript drivers take a significantly longer time to process images. You can install the BR-Script3 driver from the Brother CD-ROM or download from the Brother web site http://solutions.brother.com.

NOTE: While these adjustments may make a significant difference in color matching the effect will be general and will change the output of everything being printed. Please keep in mind that an exact match may not be possible.

13. Computer monitors display color as RGB (red, green and blue). A monitor can display millions of colors. The color laser machine uses a 4 color printing process of CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). The machine uses these 4 colors to create as many colors as possible.

The color displayed on the computer monitor is light color and the printer output is pigment color.

Also, the quality of the print out is determined by the image quality. The machine will not enhance a poor image or a low resolution image. A low resolution image can look pixeled when printed, especially around the edges. Check the file size of the image, a small file size indicates a low resolution image.

14. Confirm you are using genuine Brother toner cartridges.  Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum unit and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.
