My Brother machine produces a faint smell or odor when printing. What can I do?

Description of Solution 200000040883

The smell is typically from the normal operation of the machine and can be toner, room dust, or ozone. The smell can be more intense if the machine has been off for a length of time and toner or dust builds up on the fuser unit or on the charge corona wire in the drum unit. When the machine is then turned on, the fuser and the interior of the machine heats up the toner or dust and a smell occurs until it all dissipates. In extreme cases, the smell can linger for several hours. A burning smell may also be noticed if there was a paper jam in the fuser and it wasn't removed completely.  In certain cases Brother has also found use of non-Brother toner caused machines to emit a burning smell.  While we understand you have many choices when purchasing supplies for your Brother product, Brother strongly recommends the use of genuine Brother supplies, which have been designed specifically for use with Brother products.

Please note that if your machine is new, it may still produce a variety of smells or odors.  Smells from the manufacturing process (plastic smells, styrofoam, etc.) are common. The most noticeable smell during operation of your new Brother machine will most likely be produced by the fusing unit. The fusing unit is designed to melt the toner on your media by heating to a pre-determined temperature.

New fusing units are shipped with a protective coating that will produce a temporary burning smell. The smell is probably most noticeable on the side that has the exhaust vents when the machine is actually printing. This is normal and will disappear with use (actual time will vary, but is typically a few hours).
