Description of Solution 200000045941

1. Confirm if there is an error message on the LCD.

- If YES, follow the solution for the specific error message.

- If NO, continue to STEP 2.

2. Press MENU, 1 (General Setup), 7 (Replace Toner) to verify the toner mode.

NOTE: Be sure to pause a few seconds between pressing the keys and wait for the appropriate Menu item to appear on the LCD.

- If the word STOP is on the LCD, continue to STEP 3.

- If the word CONTINUE is on the LCD, the machine is in Continue Mode, which means it has been enabled to print beyond the guaranteed life of the toner cartridge.  When the machine is in Continue Mode, Brother cannot guarantee the print quality of the toner cartridge because it is past the expected life and it appears the toner cartridge needs to be replaced in order to resolve this issue.  To continue troubleshooting, press STOP/EXIT and continue to STEP 3.

3. Press MENU, 4 (Print Reports), 4 (User Settings).

4. Press START.  Press STOP/EXIT. A User Settings report will print.

- If the User Settings report prints out okay, discontinue troubleshooting.

- If the User Settings page prints and another issue appears (gray background, horizontal, or vertical lines), refer to the appropriate solution for the issue.

- If the User Settings report prints blank, continue to the STEP 5.

5. Turn off the power switch on the right side of the machine and unplug the power cord from the machine.

6. Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

NOTE: We recommend placing the toner and drum assembly on a piece of paper in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

7. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab located at the top of the drum unit, from left to right several times. Return the green tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.

NOTE:  This step applies to genuine Brother drums only.  You may not have the ability to clean the corona wire on a non-genuine Brother drum.

8. While facing the drum and toner assembly, on the right side of the drum you should see two small pieces of metal that look like staples aligned vertically and a metal rod protruding from the side.  Clean off these pieces with a soft lint-free dry cloth.

9. Gently rock the drum and toner assembly from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

10. Reinstall the drum and toner assembly into the Brother machine and close the front cover, pressing firmly on each side until the cover clicks into place.

11. Reconnect the power cord to the machine and power on the machine.

12. Press MENU, 4 (Print Reports), 4 (User Settings).

13. Press START.  Press STOP/EXIT. A User Settings report will print.

- If the User Settings report prints out okay, discontinue troubleshooting.

- If the User Settings report prints blank, you will need to purchase a new genuine Brother TN420 or TN450.
