How do I join the Brother machine to an Infrastructure Wireless Network?

The Wireless Setup Wizard will help you join your Brother machine to your wireless network.

 

PART I: Reset the Brother machine

 

Before configuring the Brother machine, we recommend performing a factory reset on the netcard.  Refer to the solution - How do I reset the network card back to the factory defaults?

 

 

PART II: Gather the wireless network settings of your wireless access point or wireless router

 

You will need to gather the following wireless network settings of your access point or router.  Refer to the access point's user guide for instructions on accessing the network settings information.  

 

SSID or Network Name

The name of your Wireless Network or Access Point

Authentication Method

Open System, Shared Key, WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK, LEAP, EAP-FAST

Encryption Mode

None, WEP, TKIP, AES, CKIP

Network Key

Depending on the Encryption Mode of your wireless network, a network key or password may be required

PART III: Run the Wireless Setup Wizard

*The CD is not compatible with Windows 7, however, the Wireless Setup Wizard can be run in Windows 7 from the CD.

 

**The Wireless Setup Wizard is not listed on the web site as a download for Macintosh OS 10.3 – 10.5. When downloading the Wireless Setup Wizard, please select Macintosh OS 10.6 as your operating system in order to download the Wireless Setup Wizard.

 

 

 

Windows Users - Run the Wireless Setup Wizard from the CD-ROM

 

1.    Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

 

2.    If the Auto Play window appears, select Open folder to view files.  Go to STEP 5.

 

If the CD-ROM automatically runs and prompts you to select your model machine, click Exit.

 

3.    Browse to (My) Computer.

 

4.    Right mouse click the Brother CD-ROM and left click Open.

 

5.    Open the WLan_Wiz folder.

 

6.    Double click the file BrWPrWiz.exe to run the Wireless Setup Wizard.

 

7.    Continue to PART IV.

 

 

 

 

Windows Users - Download the Wireless Setup Wizard

 

1.    For instructions on how to download the Wireless Setup Wizard, click here.   

 

2.    Once the Wireless Setup Wizard is downloaded, open the WLan_Wiz folder.

 

3.    Double click the file WW_ENG.bat to run the Wireless Setup Wizard.

 

4.    Continue to PART IV.

 

 

 

 

Macintosh Users - Run the Wireless Setup Wizard from the CD-ROM

 

1.    Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

 

2.    Open the Brother CD icon.

 

3.    Click Start Here.

 

4.    Select your model and language.

 

5.    Choose Install Printer Driver.

 

6.    Choose Wireless Network Users.

 

7.    Choose Wireless Setup Only and click Next.

 

 

8.    Continue to PART IV.

 

 

 

 

Macintosh Users - Download the Wireless Setup Wizard

 

1.    For instructions on how to download the Wireless Setup Wizard, click here.     

 

2.    Click Brother WDSW.pkg.

 

3.    Follow the installation screens to install the Wireless Setup Wizard.

 

4.    After the installation, click the HL-5370DW folder.

 

5.    Click Setup Wizard.

 

6.    Wireless Setup Only is selected, click Next.

 

 

7.    Continue to PART IV.

 

 

 

 

PART IV: Join the Brother machine to the wireless network

 

The Wireless Setup Wizard allows you to join the Brother machine to the network using an Ethernet cable or without a cable (Ad-hoc mode).  Select the setup option you prefer:

 

Ethernet cable

 

Without a cable (Ad-hoc mode)

 

IMPORTANT: Windows 8.1 and Macintosh OS 10.9 are not currently compatible with Ad-hoc mode setup. Please use an Ethernet cable to join the Brother machine to the wireless network

 

 

 

Ethernet cable

 

1.    Choose Step by Step install (Recommended). Click Next.

 

 

2.    Choose With cable (Recommended). Click Next.

 

 

3.    Temporarily connect the Ethernet cable (not included) to the Brother machine and your access point.  Make sure the Brother machine is powered on.  Click Next.

 

 

 

4.    Choose the Brother machine and click Next.

 

 

NOTE: 

 

-      If there are no Brother machines listed, click Refresh.

 

-      If the Brother machine is still not detected, wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to join the network and receive an IP address.

 

-      If after waiting 1 minute the Brother machine is still not detected, perform a factory reset on the netcard again.  Refer to the solution - How do I reset the network card back to the factory defaults?

 

-      If the Brother machine is still not detected, cancel the installation and select another method of installation (without a cable).

 

 

5.    Select your wireless network and click Next

 

 

6.    Select your Authentication Method, Encryption Mode, and enter your wireless Network Key. Click Next.

 

 

NOTE:  If you receive the message Invalid Network Key, the network key you entered is not correct for your wireless network.  Refer to the access point's user guide for instructions on accessing the network settings information or contact your access point manufacturer for assistance on gathering this information. 

 

 

7.    The settings will be sent to your Brother machine.  Click Next.

 

 

8.    A Network Configuration report will print.  Locate the Node Type near the top of the page.

 

-      If the Node Type is Brother NC-7600w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Active), continue to STEP 9

 

-      If the Node Type is Brother NC-7600w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Inactive) or Brother NC-6800h, Ethernet 10/100BASE-TX (Active), start again from PART I.

 

9.    Locate the Wireless Link Status near the bottom.

 

 

 

-      If it reads Link OK, the Brother machine is successfully joined to your wireless network. Choose Link OK and click Next. Continue to STEP 11.

 

-      If the status states Link Down, Failed to Associate, this indicates a connection error. Choose Failed to Associate and click Next. Continue to STEP 10.

 

10. The wireless setup probably failed due to incorrect security settings entered for your wireless network (SSID or Network Name, Authentication Method, Encryption Mode, or Network Key). Click Finish. Start again from PART I.

 

 

 

11. When prompted, disconnect the Ethernet cable connected to the Brother machine and access point.  Click Finish.

 

 

 

 

 

Without a cable (Ad-hoc mode)

 

1.    Choose Step by Step install (Recommended). Click Next.

 

 

2.    Choose Without cable (Advanced). Click Next.

 

 

3.    Enable to wireless netcard on the Brother machine.  Press and hold the GO button on the Brother machine until the Network Configuration page starts to print.  Locate the Node Type near the top of the page.

 

-      If the Node Type is Brother NC-7600w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Active), click the checkbox next to Checked and confirmed and click Next. Continue to STEP 4

 

-      If the Node Type is Brother NC-7600w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Inactive) or Brother NC-6800h, Ethernet 10/100BASE-TX (Active), press and hold the GO button on the Brother machine again until the Network Configuration page starts to print.  Now it will list Brother NC-7600w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Active). Click the checkbox next to Checked and confirmed and click Next.  Continue to STEP 4

 

 

4.    You will be changing the wireless network your computer is currently connected to.  Make sure to note your current wireless network settings gathered in PART I (SSID/Network Name, Authentication Method, Encryption Mode, and Network Security Key/Password) so you can restore these settings after setup.

 

 

5.    To communicate with the Brother machine in Ad-hoc mode, the wireless computer needs to join the Brother machine's SETUP network.  Refer to the following solution for instructions if needed - How do I join my computer to the SETUP wireless network? 

 

Click the checkbox next to Checked and confirmed and click Next.

 

 

6.    Choose the Brother machine and click Next.

 

 

NOTE: 

 

-      If there are no Brother machines listed, click Refresh.

 

-      If the Brother machine is still not detected, wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to join the network and receive an IP address.

11. Locate the Wireless Link Status near the bottom.

 

 

-      If it reads Link OK, the Brother machine is successfully joined to your wireless network. Choose Link OK and click Next. Continue to STEP 13.

 

-      If the status states Link Down, Failed to Associate, this indicates a connection error. Choose Failed to Associate and click Next. Continue to STEP 12.

 

12. The wireless setup probably failed due to incorrect security settings entered for your wireless network (SSID or Network Name, Authentication Method, Encryption Mode, or Network Key). Click Finish. Start again from PART I.

 

 

 

13. Switch your computer BACK to your original wireless network, rather than the SETUP network. If you need assistance doing this, refer to the following solution, but you will select your original network instead of the SETUP network this time - How do I join my computer to the SETUP wireless network? 

 

Once you have reconnected your computer back to your original network, click the checkbox next to Checked and confirmed and click Finish.
