PART I: Gather the wireless network settings of your wireless access point or wireless router

You may need to gather all or some the following wireless network settings of your access point or router depending on how your computer is connected to your wireless network.  Refer to the access point's user guide for instructions on accessing the network settings information.  

 

SSID or Network Name

The name of your Wireless Network or Access Point

Network Security Key (Password)

Encryption Key, WEP Key, Passphrase

 

If you are unsure of your wireless network's security settings, refer to How do I find the Wireless Security Information in Windows?

PART II: Reset the Brother machine

 

If you have previously configured or tried to configure the Brother machine on a wireless network, we recommend performing a Network Reset:

 

1.    Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Network. Press OK.

 

2.    Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Network Reset. Press OK.

 

3.    Press the UP ARROW key to select Reset.

 

4.    The display will read "Reboot OK?". Press the UP ARROW key to select Yes.

 

5.    The display will read "Setup Wi-Fi?". Press the DOWN ARROW key to select No.

 

 

PART III: Wireless Configuration

 

1.    If you have the supplied CD-ROM and your computer has a CD-ROM drive, go to STEP 4.

 

If you do not have the supplied CD-ROM or your computer does not have a CD-ROM drive, you will need to download the software from the Brother web site. Continue to STEP 2.

 

2.    For instructions on how to navigate the Brother website to download the Full Driver & Software Package, please click here.

 

3.    Choose your Language/Country and click OK.  Go to STEP 7.

 

 

4.    Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, choose your machine. If the language screen appears, choose your language.

 

NOTE:  If the CD does not automatically run, browse to (My) Computer and then double click on the Brother icon to run the CD.

 

5.    Click Install Printer Driver.

 

 

6.    Choose Yes to check for a newer version of the software (requires Internet connection). Click Continue.

 

 

7.    After reading and accepting the License Agreement, click Yes if you agree to the terms.

 

 

8.    Choose Wireless Network Connection. Click Next.

 

 

9.    Choose Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer. Click Next.

 

 

10. Choose Change the Firewall port settings to enable network connection and continue with the installation. (Recommended).  Click Next.

 

NOTE: If you are using a firewall other than the Windows Firewall or the Windows Firewall is off, then click OK when you receive the firewall warning screen.

 

 

11. Choose No, I do not have a USB cable. Click Next.

 

 

12. One of the following windows will appear depending on how your computer is connected to your wireless network.

 

-      If your computer is wirelessly connected to the network, the Installation Confirmation window will appear.  Place a check in Checked and confirmed and click Next. Continue to STEP 13.

 

 

-      If your computer is not wirelessly connected to the network, you can configure the wireless printer using the control panel. Go to STEP 14.

 

 

13. The installer will detect the network that your computer is connected to and report the SSID (Network Name).  The installer will ask if you want to use these settings.

 

IMPORTANT:  Some access points and routers have both a primary and guest network.  Guest networks allow access to the network Internet connection, but restricts direct access to the network.  The Brother machine should be setup on the primary network and not the guest network.

 

-      If so, choose Yes and click Next. Go to STEP 17.

 

-      Otherwise, choose No and click Next. Continue to STEP 14.

 

 

14. Choose Configure through the control panel manually. Click Next.

 

 

15. Follow the instructions to start the Setup Wizard from the machine control panel.

 

a.    Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Network. Press OK.

 

b.    Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select WLAN. Press OK.

 

c.    Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Setup Wizard. Press OK.

 

d.    The display will read "WLAN Enable?". Press the UP ARROW key to select On.

 

e.    Use the control panel to connect the printer to the wireless network. If needed, refer to How do I configure the wireless printer using the control panel?

 

f.     When the setup is finished, click Next. A WLAN report will print.

 

 

16. Check the Connection on the WLAN report.

 

 

-      If your machine is connected successfully, the WLAN report will read "Connection: OK". Place a check in Checked and confirmed and click Next. Go to PART IV.

 

-      If the WLAN report reads "Connection: Failed", click Back. Repeat from STEP 15.

 

NOTE: If the connection fails a second time, click Cancel to quit the installer. You can start again from PART II or choose another setup method (ex. temporarily using a USB or Ethernet cable or configuring using the control panel), refer to Wireless Setup Methods

 

17. Start the WLAN Assistant on the control panel of the printer.

 

a.    Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Network. Press OK.

 

b.    Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select WLAN. Press OK.

 

c.    Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select WLAN Assistant. Press OK.

 

d.    If "WLAN Enable?" is displayed, press the UP ARROW key to select On.

 

 

 

18. The setup will finish or fail to find the printer.

 

-      If the setup finishes, continue to STEP 19.

 

 

-      If the setup fails to find the printer, choose Retry and click Next. Repeat from STEP 17.

 

NOTE: If the setup fails a second time, choose Try something else and click Next. The installer will quit. You can start again from PART II or choose another setup method (ex. temporarily using a USB or Ethernet cable or configuring using the control panel), refer to Wireless Setup Methods

 

 

19. When the setup is finished, a WLAN report will print.

 

-      If your machine is connected successfully, the display shows "Connected" and the WLAN report will read "Connection: OK". Go to PART IV.

 

-      If the WLAN report reads "Connection: Failed", check the error code on the report. Refer to When I attempt to join my machine to the wireless network, the WLAN Report has an error code. What can I do?   

 

 

 

PART IV: Printer Driver Installation

 

1.    Choose your Brother machine from the list, and then click Next.

 

NOTE: If the printer is not detected:

 

a.    Click Refresh to search the network again.

 

b.    If the printer is still not detected, cycle the power on the Router or Access Point for about 15 seconds.

 

c.    Wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to join the network and receive an IP address.   

 

d.    Click Refresh to search the network again.

 

e.    If the Brother machine is still not found on the network, Refresh once again and wait 1 more minute. If the Brother machine is still not found, click Cancel and setup the machine on the network once again.

 

 

2.    The installation of the printer driver will automatically continue.  The installation screens appear one after the other.  Do not cancel any of the screens during the installation.  It may take a few moments for all screens to appear.

 

3.    When the User's Guides screen is displayed, you can click View Manuals on the Web to view the user's guides.  Click Next.

 

 

4.    Read the Environmental Advice for Imaging Equipment message. Click Next.

 

 

5.    When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, you can click Brother Registration and follow the on-screen instructions.  Once you have completed the registration or if you have already registered your Brother machine, click Next.

 

 

6.    When the first Setup is Complete window appears, you may enable (check) or disable (uncheck) any of the following settings as desired and then click Next to continue the installation:

 

-      Enable Status Monitor on Startup: A software tool for monitoring device status and error notifications from your PC.

 

-      Enable the Network Connection Repair Tool: Software that checks for network problems and automatically attempts to correct them.

 

-      Set as Default Printer: Set this printer as the default printer for the current user.

 

 

7.    When the second Setup is Complete window appears, you may enable (check) or disable (uncheck) any of the following settings as desired and then click Finish to continue the installation:

-      Brother Product Research and Support Program: Help us plan enhancements to our products.

 

 

8.    When the Software Update Setting screen appears, choose the software update setting you want and click OK.

 

 

9.    If the Brother Product Research & Support Program starts up, follow the on-screen instructions if you would like to participate.
