How do I join the Brother machine to an Infrastructure Wireless Network?

IMPORTANT NOTE BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

The Brother machine can be configured on the wireless network using the Wireless Setup Wizard and a USB cable or using the control panel

 

Configuring the wireless printer using the control panel is not the preferred setup method.  It may be difficult to enter your network name or network security key (password) using the UP and DOWN ARROW keys on the control panel. 

 

If you prefer to configure the wireless printer using the Wireless Setup Wizard and a USB cable, continue to PART I.

 

If you prefer to configure the wireless printer using the control panel, refer to How do I configure the wireless printer using the control panel?    

 

 

 

 

PART I: Gather the wireless network settings of your wireless access point or wireless router

 

You may need to gather all or some the following wireless network settings of your access point or router depending on how your computer is connected to your wireless network.  Refer to the access point's user guide for instructions on accessing the network settings information.  

 

SSID or Network Name

The name of your Wireless Network or Access Point

Network Security Key (Password)

Encryption Key, WEP Key, Passphrase

PART II: Reset the Brother machine

 

If you have previously configured or tried to configure the Brother machine on a wireless network, we recommend performing a Network Reset:

 

1.    Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Network. Press OK.

 

2.    Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Network Reset. Press OK.

 

3.    Press the UP ARROW key to select Reset.

 

4.    The display will read "Reboot OK?". Press the UP ARROW key to select Yes.

 

5.    The display will read "Setup Wi-Fi?". Press the DOWN ARROW key to select No.

 

 

PART III: Run the Wireless Setup Wizard

Windows Users - Run the Wireless Setup Wizard from the CD-ROM

 

1.    Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

 

2.    If the Auto Play window appears, select Open folder to view files.  Go to STEP 5.

 

If the CD-ROM automatically runs and prompts you to select your model machine, click Exit.

 

3.    Browse to (My) Computer.

 

4.    Right mouse click the Brother CD-ROM and left click Open.

 

5.    Open the install folder.

 

6.     Open the wlan_wiz folder.

 

7.    Double click the file BrWPrWiz.exe to run the Wireless Setup Wizard.

 

8.    Continue to PART IV.

 

 

 

 

Windows Users - Download the Full Driver & Software Package

 

1.    For instructions on how to download the Full Driver & Software Package, click here.   

 

2.    If the software automatically runs after the download, click CANCEL.

 

 

3.    Once the Full Driver & Software Package is downloaded, open the install folder.

 

NOTE: The downloaded file is typically saved in the Downloads folder.

 

4.    Open the wlan_wiz folder.

 

5.    Double click the file BrWPrWiz.exe to run the Wireless Setup Wizard.

 

6.    Continue to PART IV.

 

 

 

 

Macintosh Users - Download the Full Driver & Software Package

 

1.    For instructions on how to download the Full Driver & Software Package, click here.   

 

2.    Double-click the Brother icon on the desktop.

 

3.    Open the Utilities folder.

 

4.    Open Wireless Device Setup Wizard.

 

5.    One of the following windows will appear:

 

-      If the Wireless Device Setup window appears, go to PART IV.

 

            

 

-      If the following warning appears, click Open and go to PART IV.

"Wireless Device Setup Wizard" is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?

 

           

 

-      If the following warning appears, click OK to close the warning and continue to STEP 6.

"Wireless Device Setup Wizard" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.

 

   

 

6.    Open System Preferences from the Apple Menu or in the Dock, select System Preferences.

 

 

7.    Open Security & Privacy.

 

 

8.    Click the lock icon in the bottom left.

 

 

9.    Enter your Macintosh password and click Unlock.

 

NOTE: If you do not know your system password, please contact Apple or your network administrator for assistance.

 

 

10. Click Open Anyway.

 

 

11. Open Wireless Device Setup Wizard.

 

12. Continue to PART IV.

 

 

 

PART IV: Join the Brother machine to the wireless network

 

The Wireless Setup Wizard allows you to join the Brother machine to the network using a USB cable.

 

1.    Choose Yes, I have a USB cable to use for installation and click Next.

 

 

2.    If the Important Notice window appears, click Checked and confirmed. Click Next.

 

 

3.    When prompted, temporarily connect the USB cable (not included) directly to the computer and the Brother machine. Make sure the Brother machine is powered on.  Please wait a few moments for the installation to continue.

 

NOTE:

-      This step may take a few minutes for the USB driver to be installed.

 

-      If the installation freezes at this point, verify the USB cable is securely connected to the Brother machine and computer.  Verify the USB cable is connected to the USB port on the machine and not the Network/Ethernet port.  Try connecting the USB cable to another USB port on the back of the computer.

 

 

4.    One of the following windows will appear depending on how your computer is connected to your wireless network.

 

-      If the Installation Confirmation window appears, place a check in Checked and confirmed and click Next. Continue to STEP 5.

 

 

-      If the Available Wireless Networks window appears, continue to STEP 6.

 

 

5.    The installer will detect the network that your computer is connected to and report the SSID (Network Name).  The installer will ask if you want to use these settings.

 

IMPORTANT:  Some access points and routers have both a primary and guest network.  Guest networks allow access to the network Internet connection, but restricts direct access to the network.  The Brother machine should be setup on the primary network and not the guest network.

 

-      If so, choose Yes and click Next. Go to STEP 9.

 

-      Otherwise, choose No and click Next. Continue to STEP 6.

 

 

6.    Select your wireless network.  This information was collected in PART I above.  Click Next

 

IMPORTANT:  Some access points and routers have both a primary and guest network.  Guest networks allow access to the network Internet connection, but restricts direct access to the network.  The Brother machine should be setup on the primary network and not the guest network.

 

NOTE: 

-      If the list is blank, check that the access point has power, is broadcasting the SSID, and that the access point is within range for wireless communication.  Then click Refresh.

 

-      If the SSID is still not found, cycle the power on the Router or Access Point for about 15 seconds.  Once the access point powers back on, wait about a minute and then click Refresh

 

-      If you access point is set to not broadcast the SSID you can manually add it by clicking the Advanced button.  Enter the Name (SSID) and then click Next. Enter the other required network information and click Next. Continue to STEP 9.

 

 

7.    Enter your wireless Network Key. This information was collected in PART I above.  Click Next.

 

 

8.    Your wireless network settings will be displayed, click Next.

 

NOTE: If a Failed to Connect window appears, read the information to determine the reason it failed (ex. network key incorrect). Click Retry and return to STEP 6.

 

 

9.    When prompted, disconnect the USB cable connected to the Brother machine and computer.  The next window will automatically appear after the cable is disconnected. The wireless setup is now complete.

 

 

10. The Brother machine is now connected to your wireless network. Click Finish.  Windows users continue to STEP 11.

 

 

11. There is second copy of the driver in the Printers folder. It was installed when the USB cable was connected. It is no longer necessary so it is safe to remove it. 

 

12. Open the Printers folder.

13. Right click on the Brother HL-Lxxx series USB printer driver and select Remove Device.

 

 

14. Select Yes to remove the device.
