Step 1 Measure the width of the book from the front edge, around the spine to the back book edge. Add 6" to this measurement for inside pocket flaps. Measure the height of the book. Add 1" to this measurement.
Step 2 Cut the fabric to the measurements determined in Step 1.
Step 3 Cut the batting 1" smaller in both length and width.
Step 4 Using fabric chalk or a disappearing fabric pen; mark stitching guidelines on the right side of the fabric for cording placement.
Step 5 Spray temporary adhesive spray on the batting and center it on wrong side of the fabric. (1" in from all edges of the fabric.)
Step 6 Thread the 7-Hole Cording foot (SA158) with cording following the directions inside the foot package. Place the foot on the machine and leave approximately one inch of cording extending from the back of the foot. Knot all the cords together to keep them from slipping forward through the holes in the foot.
Step 7 Thread the machine with invisible thread on top and regular thread in the bobbin. Machine settings: 3-point zig zag stitch, stitch width 7.0, stitch length 1.4, lower top tension to 3. (Be sure to test your machine settings on a scrap of fabric before sewing on the actual book cover.)
Step 8 Stitch over the cords following the lines you drew on the fabric.
Step 9 At the end of the row, clip the cords at the back of the foot and leave at least one inch extending out behind the foot. (Be sure to follow this procedure at the end of each row.)
Step 10 Tie the cords again behind the foot and begin the next row of stitching.
Step 11 On the side edges, fold under 1/4" and press. Fold under another 1/4", press and topstitch.
Step 12 From each of the finished side edges, measure in 2-1/2" at top and bottom and fold back onto right side of cover (right sides together). Stitch the top and the bottom with 1/2" seams. Turn right side out. This completes the pockets for the book cover.
Step 13 Once the pockets are complete, press under 1/2" on the top and bottom of the cover.
Step 14 Place strips of fusible web inside the 1/2" hem on the top and bottom of the cover. Fuse into place.
Step 15 Slip the book into the pockets and enjoy.
Make an easy bookmark by braiding cords together and knotting ends. Place decorative bead on one end and tie another knot to hold the bead in place.
