Bought one for the office, then one for home
January 18, 2014
By baltovet from Maryland
I purchased a MFC 8820 in 2003 and it lasted well into 2013 before it took its last breath one day. I replaced it in the fall of 2013 with the 8950DW, and I have been nothing but impressed with the machine. I have an inexpensive MFC 7740 at home which works well , but lacks the speed and features found on the 8950. When I saw that the 8950 was on sale at a local office supply store last week, I purchased another one for home. It may be a bit of overkill, but I liked the first one so much I wanted the conveniences which it adds for my home use as well The ONLY issue I have had so far is that on the first one, some of the pieces of blue packaging tape left a residue when they were peeled off, which makes it less than smooth when sliding paper across the affected area. (I tried Goof-off, and even that didn't get rid of it) The second printer did not have any such issue. The machine is very fast and so far has not had a single malfunction. The touchscreen is a great feature. My only recommendation would be to make the buttons more "clicky" as opposed to the soft feel that they have.

MFC-8950DW with damaged drum
January 11, 2014
By Hadi from New york , ny
I was the way support handled the damage drum.
I told them since I purchased this heavy duty machine the drum was heating up every 90 page but instead they ordered the electric parts that were brand new and keep changing parts .since they couldnt solve my problem.if they would have changed the damage drum they would have saved a lot more money but they were too stuburn. So i returned back the machine and got a new one no thanks to your support.

Pretty poor at best
December 11, 2013
By docjackson from Las Vegas, Nevada
I've been a loyal Brother user and promoter as an IT guy, IT manager, and contracted IT guy since the early 90's. There have been, out of hundreds of models and machines installed, maintained, and monitored, precisely two that have been an on-going pain in the neck.

Unfortunately, this is one of them.

We have a lot of trouble with paper jams, and that's while using good paper and genuine OEM supplies. Users complain about the noise, which is considerable. The scanner software is twitchy at best; I reinstalled Control Center 4 four times as it kept losing track of the unit, and finally gave up. The gray-scaling on scanning and printing is poor, and worse, it's inconsistent.

Worst of all, it's only nine months old and had light use, but a repairman is coming today to replace the entire drive assembly because this one died. It's making a rhythmic popping noise indicative of a gear jumping instead of meshing. It sits in an air-conditioned office next to two employees who keep it clean to the point of near-obsession, and I keep the rollers wiped down.

I've kept an eye on the condition and usage, and my conclusion is that it's either a poor design or a "lemon," because its specs indicate it should have withstood many times the use it's had, which has only been about two reams of paper per month.
