Highly disappointed
January 19, 2015
By pmac7 from Statesville, NC
We have been using Brother's printers for years and I was always pleased with the pricing and the cost of the toner. Not with this one, I am on my 2nd printer in less than a year. The first one chunks of the fuser roller broke off (using as instructed). I called support and they told me that I needed the "Original Receipt", so I printed off the receipt purchase from my Staples account and the CSR told me that wasn't the "Original Receipt". So having hundreds in new toner I bought a new one, it blows through toner and constantly jams. I have read many reviews of the printer doing the exact same to other, I feel that it is a design problem that the manufacture should have addressed. Never again.

Excellent Printer
December 10, 2014

The HL-3170CDW is an excellent printer, performance wise. If it has any negatives it is the cost of the toner cartridges. They are a little pricy, but they do make excellent printed documents.

Worst Printer Ever
December 9, 2014
By jrussosd from San Diego, California
This is a very poorly designed printer. It is almost impossible to feed paper and envelopes through the manual feed without having them skew. The tiny guides do not help. There is nothing in the literature accompanying the printer advising the buyer the paper fed through the manual feed had to be grabbed by the printer which sometimes takes several tries (I was on the telephone with Brother for over 30 minutes before a supervisor told me this after the first person was unable to help) You must also change two flimsy tabs in the rear of the printer each time you want to print an envelope then change it back for paper. If you fail to move the tabs for the envelope it comes out creased, if you fail to change the tabs back for paper the toner does not fuse and it smears off. Brother's "support" stated flatly, "we only guarantee the machine will work as designed, not that you will like the way it works." Consequently, I am stuck with a machine that is a pain to operate because that is the way it was designed to work. Had the literature warned of the shortcomings of the printer I would have purchased something else. I have never had to make so many changes to a Canon or HP printer.

First Printer Broke
November 24, 2014
By badfuser from New Jersey
This is my second HL-3170CDW printer. The first one did not last more than 18 months. The fuser roller became damaged. Luckily I had purchased product protection from Staples when I originally purchase it so I was able to replace it without having to pay too much. The only reason I purchased another one was because I had over $300 worth of unused toner that I did not want to throw away. The printer itself is quite god with nice color and good print speed.
