Description of Solution 200000024024

PART I: Gather the wireless network settings of your wireless access point or wireless router

Gather the following wireless network settings of your access point or router.  Refer to the access point's user guide for instructions on accessing the network settings information.

SSID or Network Name

The name of your Wireless Network or Access Point

Network Security Key (Password)

Encryption Key, WEP Key, Passphrase

Authentication Method

Open System, Shared Key, WPA/WPA2-PSK*

Encryption Mode

None, WEP, TKIP, AES

*NOTE: The Brother machine only supports WPA2-PSK with AES.  If you are using WPA2-PSK with TKIP you will receive a connection error.

IMPORTANT:  Some access points and routers have both a primary and guest network.  Guest networks allow access to the network Internet connection, but restricts direct access to the network.  The Brother machine should be setup on the primary network and not the guest network.

If you do not have the network settings information or cannot find this information, refer to the solution - How do I find the Wireless Security Information in Windows?

If you need to contact your router manufacturer for assistance gathering the required information, refer to the following link to obtain contact information for common router manufacturers:

http://www.brother-usa.com/support/wireless/wireless_router_information.htm

PART II: Perform a factory reset on the printer network card

1.    Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to select Network. Press OK.

2.    Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to select Factory Reset. Press OK.

3.    The LCD display will show "Restart Printer?", press OK again.

PART III: Connect the Ethernet cable and print out the Printer Settings pages to determine the IP address

1.    Connect the network interface cable to the Ethernet port on the Brother machine and then connect it to a free port on the network router.

2.    Wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute after connecting before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to connect to the network and receive an IP address.

3.    Print the Printer Settings by pressing the OK key 3 times.  Look at the last page.

4.    Locate the Node Type near the top of the page.

-      If the Node Type is Brother NC-6700h, Ethernet 10/100BASE-TX (Active), go to STEP 5

-      If the Node Type is Brother NC-6700h, Ethernet 10/100BASE-TX (Inactive) or Brother NC-7500w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Active), you will need to reset the network card again, repeat PART II.

5.    Locate the IP Address in the middle. Verify the IP Address of the printer is in the same range as your network.

-      If the IP Address is not within the range of your network, you may not have waited long enough before printing the Network Configuration. Wait 1 more minute then repeat STEP 3 to reprint the Network Configuration.

-      If the IP Address is still not within range, you will need to reset the printer network card, start again from PART II.

PART IV: Configure the Wireless Network Card

1.    Open a web browser.

2.    Enter the IP Address of the printer into the web browser screen and press ENTER.  The Brother Web Management screen will appear.

9.    Leave the Channel setting as is.

10. Select the appropriate Authentication Method from the drop down list (Figure 7).  Refer to the network settings information gathered in PART I.

11. Select the appropriate Encryption Method (Figure 8).  Refer to the network settings information gathered in PART I.

NOTE: If WEP is selected as the Encryption Method, enter the hex code for the WEP Key 1. There is no need to enter the Passphrase for WEP Encryption.

NOTE: If an Authentication Method other than Open or Shared is selected, then a Passphrase must be entered on the Passphrase line (Figure 9).

12. Click Submit to update the printer with your wireless settings (Figure 10).

13. You will be prompted to enable the wireless interface. Click Yes (Figure 11).

NOTE:

-      2 pages will print out. The second page is the wireless settings page. The Node Type will display the network card as Inactive if the network cable is still connected. Once you disconnect the cable, the Wireless interface will become active.

-      The IP Address will be 0.0.0.0. This is expected. Continue to the next step.

15. Verify the printer is now attached to the wireless access point or wireless router:

a.    Wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to join the network and receive an IP address.

b.    Press the OK key 3 times to print the Printer Settings pages.

c.    Locate the Node Type near the top of the page.

-      If the Node Type is Brother NC-7500w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Active), go to STEP d

-      If the Node Type is Brother NC-7500w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Inactive), you will need to reset the wireless network card again, enable the wireless netcard:

i . Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select Network. Press OK.

ii. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select WLAN. Press OK.
