Description of Problem 100000022458
How do I correct light or faint color on the whole page or on half of the page when printing?

Description of Solution 200000028577

If the colors on printed documents are too light, blurry, or not as bright as expected, there are many different things you can try to resolve the issue.  Follow the steps listed below:

1.    Verify all of the packing material inside the machine has been removed:

a.    Press down on the front cover release button and open the front cover by pulling it towards you.

b.    Grasp the green handle of the drum unit and pull the drum unit out until it stops.

NOTE: If you cannot pull the drum unit out, make sure the front cover is fully open.

c.    Verify all of the orange plastic packing material (6 pieces) and blue tape was removed from the drum unit.  The packing material is located in the following areas:

-      2 orange plastic pieces on top of the drum unit.

-      2 orange plastic pieces on the right side of the drum unit.

NOTE: The 2 pieces may be connected together when removed.

-      2 orange plastic pieces on the left side of the drum unit.

NOTE: The 2 pieces may be connected together when removed.

-      1 piece of blue tape on the left side of the drum unit.  Make sure this blue tape is completely removed.

-      If orange packing material or blue tape is found on the drum unit and is removed, go to STEP d.

-      If no packing material or blue tape is found on the drum unit, slide the drum unit back into the machine and close the front cover.  Then, go to STEP 2.

d.    After removing the packing material and blue tape, slide the drum back into the machine and close the front cover.

e.    Once the display reads the date and time, print a Test Print by pressing MENU, 4 (Printer), 2 (Print Options), 3 (Test Print) and BLACK START. The machine will print out a Test Print.

-      If the print quality is acceptable, the issue is resolved.

-      If the print quality is still unacceptable, go to STEP 2.

2.    Verify toner save mode is turned OFF.  When you set the toner save feature to ON, print appears lighter.

a.    Press MENU, 1 (General Setup), 4 (Ecology), 1 (Toner Save).

b.    Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to select Off.

c.    Press OK.

d.    Press STOP/EXIT.

3.    Print a Test Print by pressing MENU, 4 (Printer), 2 (Print Options), 3 (Test Print), and BLACK START.

-      If the print quality is acceptable, the issue is resolved.

-      If the print quality is still unacceptable, continue on.

4.    The output density for each color may vary depending on the machine's environment, temperature and humidity. Calibration and registration helps improve the color density and quality.

Calibration

a.    Press MENU, 4 (Printer), 6 (Calibration).

b.    Press OK to select Calibrate.

-      If the print quality is acceptable, the issue is resolved.

-      If the print quality is still unacceptable, continue on.

6.    Verify the toner cartridges are installed in correct slots.

a.    Power off the machine using the on/off switch located on the right side of the machine.

b.    Press down on the front cover release button and open the front cover by pulling it towards you.

c.    Grasp the green handle of the drum unit and pull the drum unit out until it stops.

d.    Verify the toner cartridge color matches the same color label on the left side of the drum unit. The first slot should contain Black (K), second slot should contain Yellow (Y), third slot should contain Magenta (M), and fourth slot should contain Cyan (C) toner cartridge.

e.    If any of the toner cartridges are not in the correct slot, remove the toner cartridge by grasping the handle and pulling it straight up and re-install it in the correct slot.

-      If the print quality is still unacceptable, continue on.

10. Check the settings within the application you are using. It may have options to adjust the color. Certain programs have their own settings that could potentially override the machine settings, which will affect color matching. If the issue persists, try contacting your program or software vendor for assistance.

11. Make adjustments to the printer driver. The printer driver provides a host of adjustments that can be made to resolution, hue, color, saturation, etc. This is usually accessed from the File and Print option when you are about to print a document. The machine driver usually has a Properties, Preferences, or Setup button that provides access to these adjustments. The exact location varies with the application being used. You may need to consult your application documentation for details.

12. Change the color profile settings of the printer driver. The color profile is used by the operating system and the machine to create the best possible match between the image on the computer screen and the image that is printed. Again, the location varies with the operating system that is used. You may need to consult the operating system documentation for details.

13. Postscript drivers often do a better job at reproducing graphics and images. It does so, however, at the expense of speed. Postscript drivers take a significantly longer time to process images. You can install the BR-Script3 driver from the Brother CD-ROM or download from the Brother web site http://solutions.brother.com.

NOTE: While these adjustments may make a significant difference in color matching, the effect will be general and will change the output of everything being printed. Please keep in mind that an exact match may not be possible.

14. Computer monitors display color as RGB (red, green and blue). A monitor can display millions of colors. The color laser machine uses a 4 color printing process of CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black). The machine uses these 4 colors to create as many colors as possible.

The color displayed on the computer monitor is light color and the printer output is pigment color.

Also, the quality of the print out is determined by the image quality. The machine will not enhance a poor image or a low resolution image. A low resolution image can look pixeled when printed, especially around the edges. Check the file size of the image, a small file size indicates a low resolution image.

15. Confirm you are using genuine Brother toner cartridges.  Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum unit and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.
