My Brother machine is making a grinding, clicking, or squeaking noise when printing. What can I do?

Description of Solution 200000029541

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.

If your Brother machine is making a grinding, clicking, or squeaking noise when printing, verify the drum units and toner cartridges are installed correctly by following the steps listed below:

1. Turn the machine OFF using the power switch located on the right side of the machine.

2. Press the front cover release button and then open the front cover.

3. Hold the green handle of the drum unit. Pull the drum unit out until it stops.

4. Turn the green lock lever (1) at the left of the machine counterclockwise to the release position. Holding the green handles of the drum unit, lift the front of the drum unit and remove it from the machine.

NOTE: Place the drum unit and toner cartridge assemblies on a piece of disposable paper or cloth to avoid spilling and scattering the toner.

5. Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and slightly push it to unlock. Then pull it out of the drum unit. Repeat this for all the toner cartridges.

NOTE: We recommend you place the toner cartridge(s) on a clean, flat surface with a piece of paper underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

6. Reinstall the toner cartridges into the appropriate colored section of the drum unit until it clicks into place.

7. Reinstall the drum unit; make sure the green lock lever (1) is in the release position as shown below.

8. Match the guide ends (2) of the drum unit to the triangle marks (1) on both sides of the machine, and then gently slide the drum unit into the machine until it stops at the green lock lever.

9. Turn the green lock lever clockwise to the lock position.

10. Push the drum unit in until it stops.

11. Close the front cover of the machine.

12. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

13. Check the paper in the paper tray to make sure that the paper is below the maximum paper mark (red line on the right green paper guide). Adjust the paper guides to fit the paper size. Make sure the guides are firmly in the slots.

14. Install the paper tray back in the machine.

15. Power the machine back on.

16. Print a test page.

a. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to select Machine Info. Press the OK key.

b. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to select Test Print. Press the OK key to print the Test Print.

c. Press the CANCEL key to exit the menu.
